Chapter-1. Communication cycle


What is communication?
• Communication is a two-way process.
• In this process one person is the sender ,and he conveys a
message to another person who is the receiver.
• An effective communication is a communication between two
or more people where the information is successfully
delivered, received and understood.

Features of effective communication

• Involves sender and receiver, and both should use a


common language.
• Message should be clear.
• Listening to others is very important.
• There must be a response from the receiver.
Importance of effective communication skills

A father planned an urgent trip to his son’s home in


another state. He sent an e-mail to his son. In the e-
mail, he wrote ‘Reach Tomorrow’ instead of
‘Reaching Tomorrow’, by mistake. When the father
reached his son’s home, his daughter-in-law was
surprised to see him because the son had already
left to visit his father. The daughter-in-law showed
him the e-mail which stated ‘Reach tomorrow’
instead of ‘Reaching tomorrow’.
Impact of effective communication on our lives

• It encourages active participation in group discussions.


• It helps in building relationships with others.
• Builds confidence
• Helps in handling misunderstanding in an organization.
• Saves time and reduces stress.
• It fosters success in professional and personal life .
Barriers to effective communication
Barriers to effective communication
• Environmental :These are the physical
conditions that affect communication.
Ex: Defective instrument,uncomfertable seating
arrangement, unhygienic room conditions.
• Situational: Factors like loud music, noise from
machines etc.
• Individual:
Individual barriers
• Attitudinal: Factors like age, lack of interest,
discomfort with the topic etc. define how a listener
interprets the message
• Linguist Ability: Lack of proficiency in the language,
speech disorders affects the interpretation of the
message.
• Inattention: If listener is not interested in the
conversation then he may not be attentive.
• Emotional state: Emotions of the sender and receiver
may misinterpret message.
