What are cells?

CELLS are the basic units of life.

All living things are made up of CELLS.
CELLS are very small and can be only seen through a
microscope.
CELLS can be different shapes and sizes.

Cells carry out the three life processes of all living things:

- NUTRITION: They obtain nutrients from food

- REPRODUCTION: They can divide and produce new

cells.

- INTERACTION: They react to what happens around

them.

CELLS have 3 main parts: MEMBRANE

- THE MEMBRANE is the

covering around
the cell.

- The NUCLEUS
coordinates the
activities of the cell.
NUCLEUS
- The CYTOPLASM is the
liquid between the
nucleus and the
membrane. It contains
lots of ORGANELLES.

ANIMAL CELL
Animals have got million of cells, they are
multicellular.
Animal cells do not produce their own food.

shape is often irregular.

PARTS OF THE ANIMAL CELL

MEMBRANE: It protects the cell by controlling what

goes in and out.

NUCLEUS: coordinates the activities of the cell.

CYTOPLASM: It is a jelly liquid. It gives the cell its

shape and keeps the organelles (mitochondria,
vacuole…) in the correct place.

MITOCHONDRIA are the organelles in charge of

producing the energy in cells.

Plant cells are usually bigger than animal

cells and have a regular shape.
PARTS OF THE PLANT CELL:

- A NUCLEUS
- A CYTOPLASM with ORGANELLES
(mitochondria, vacuole…)
- A CELL MEMBRANE
- CHLOROPLASTS that contain a green
substance called CHLOROPHYLL.
Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight, which plants
need to make their own food.

LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION
How are living things organised?
CELLS
Cells are the basic units of
life.

TISSUE
Groups of the same type of
cells join together to form
tissues.

ORGAN
Tissues join together to
form organs.

SYSTEM
Organs form systems. They
work together to carry out
a common function.

ORGANISM
All the different systems
work together to form an
organism.

True or false? Correct orally the false ones

1. In the interaction function animals move and react to their

environment.
2. In the reproduction function animals get nutrients from food.
3. In the nutrition function animals feed from other living things.
4. In the interaction functions animals create new members of the
same species.
