Barkstall’s Parent Guide

to Remote Learning

Here are the norms for today’s meeting:

Today you will get an overview of the following


programs Barkstall will be utilizing for Virtual Learning:
-Google Classroom
-Zoom
-Seesaw
-Remind App
-Technology Support/Help
-Accessing Curriculum
Virtual Learning Schedule

Students will be assigned to either an a.m. session or p.m. session for


live instruction.

When students are not in live instruction, they are expected to complete
their independent learning activities.

Live Instruction: 2.5 hours Independent Learning: 2.5 hours.

8:45 - 11: 15: Session 1 (Live Instruction or Independent Learning)

11:15 - 11:45 - Lunch

11:45 - 2:15: Session 2 (Live Instruction or Independent Learning)

How to Access Google


Classroom

What is Google Classroom?

Think of Google Classroom (GC)


as your child’s digital link to learning.

Teachers use GC to share assignments,


homework, newsletters, and much more with
students AND parents!

How to Access Google Classroom


Step 1: Students need to log-in to their assigned chromebook.

Step 2: Click on the Google Classroom Icon located at the bottom of the screen.

*If you do not see this, click on the Google Chrome web browser and you will see a “waffle”
in the top right hand corner. Click on that and it will drop down different resources that we
use in the district.

Step 3: Find their teacher’s Google Classroom and click on that class.

Stream: The stream is where students will find announcements from their teacher, upcoming
deadlines, and where they can post and comment (if teacher enables).

Classwork: The Classwork page is where students can find their assignments and class
materials.

People: The People page is where students can email their teacher and classmates.

Parent access to Google Classroom


Parents can access their child’s teachers’ Google Classroom in one of the following ways:

1. As a guardian, you may request to receive an email summary of your child’s Google Classroom
assignments.

2. From the district issued Chromebook , ask the student to log in and launch the Google Classroom App.

How can you receive Guardian Email Summaries?

The teacher can add you as a guardian in Google Classroom which will send you an email invitation.

In your email program, open the email invitation and click accept.

○ You can choose the frequency of the emails,such as daily or weekly.

○ You can unsubscribe or remove yourself from Classroom at any time

- Missing work - work that is late at the time the
email was sent

- Upcoming work - work that is due today and


tomorrow (daily emails) or work that is due in the
upcoming week (weekly emails) - Class activity -
announcements, assignments, and questions
recently posted by teachers

**Guardians will NOT be able to view their child’s


work or assignment details through email
summaries. This is only a summary.

How to Access Zoom


Zoom

Zoom will be the platform that all teachers use for their live instruction.

To Access Zoom:

Students need to go to their Google Classroom and go to the Classwork tab. Find the Topic of ‘Join
Zoom Meeting’ and click on the link.

If you have never used Zoom before then you will need to click download and run Zoom. If you have
Zoom downloaded on your computer then click Open zoom.us

**Students do not need a code or I.D. to join Zoom.

Zoom Features
Once students join the Zoom meeting, they will be put in the Waiting Room until the teacher invites them
in.

Most likely the teacher has it set to mute all participants when they first join.

Students will only be able to hear their teacher at this time.

If the teacher invites students to speak, the teacher will either unmute the student’s microphone or a student
will see a message that pops up that says “Unmute Myself” and they can click on it.

Students can also click on the “Chat” feature to type in responses.

Zoom Troubleshooting
What if my teacher cannot hear me?

● Bottom left corner next to the microphone, click the ^ arrow to try other microphones.

What if my teacher cannot see me?

● Bottom left corner next to the video camera, click the ^ arrow to try other cameras your
computer may be connected to.

To exit from the Zoom meeting, you will click on the red button “Leave Meeting” in the
lower right hand corner of the screen.

How to Access Seesaw

Seesaw (K-1 only)


Seesaw creates a powerful learning loop that brings
together students, teachers, and families to deepen student
learning.

Your child’s teacher will use Seesaw to share learning activities and resources,
capture your child’s learning, and communicate about progress and needs.

Students use the Class app to complete assignments and post to the Journal.

Access to Seesaw:
To access the Seesaw Class app, students will need to either log in through their
Google Classroom or through Clever.

✘ To help your child log in to Seesaw:

To access Seesaw Family App:

✘ -Access the Seesaw App or log in as a Family Member at app.seesaw.me

✘ -Teachers will be sending out invitations by text or email for families to access.

REMIND is accessible with any device—a computer, tablet or any mobile phone.

✘ Receive either an email or a text.


✘ Remind is free to use for teachers, students, and parents!
✘ Get important school updates right to your phone.
✘ Communicate with your teacher about your student’s progress
✘ Notifications are sent by text or email to the contact information the school has
on file.
✘ Download the Remind App for easy messaging on the go.
✘ You will be auto enrolled into your student’s class.

If you need any help with technology:


1.) Call Barkstall at 373-5580.
2.) Fill out a Help Request Form to log the issue and a staff member will follow
up.
3.) Families/Staff can send an email to barkstallhelpline@u4sd.org
