Demo Fair Testing

This document provides a science lesson on fair testing for 7th grade students. It reviews the key components of a scientific investigation including the aim, method, results, and conclusion. It then presents a scenario about a student named Gabriel conducting an experiment to see how balloon size is affected by temperature. The lesson includes questions to help students understand how to design a fair test and analyze Gabriel's experiment. The goal is for students to learn about the importance of fair testing in scientific investigations.

SHORT REVIEW QUESTIONS

Q1. Name one of the important components/parts of

a scientific investigation.

 Aim/ask a question
 Method/ what to do/procedure
 Results/what you measured/data
 Conclusion/what you learned.

SHORT REVIEW QUESTIONS

Q2. What are some of the things you can do to

make sure your experiment is a fair test?
To make sure it’s a fair test you have to change
something, measure something and keep everything
else the same or you have to measure everything
accurately, OR regarding reliability, you have to
measure things three times.
5
SHORT REVIEW QUESTIONS

Q3. Why is fair testing important in conducting

scientific investigation?

Experiments in science have to be fair tests

otherwise the results might not be valid.

PURPOSE/intentions
LESSON PURPOSE/INTENTIONS
This lesson is about describing and writing
the components of a scientific investigation
and how important this is for learning and
when answering questions in science.

We want to be sure we know and

understand about fair testing.

LESSON ACTIVITY
Fair Testing
Gabriel blew up some balloons with air and tied them along a
fence in his backyard to see what happened to them in sunlight.
Some balloons were in the shade of the tree.

Gabriel wondered why some balloons

started to get bigger – some even got so
big that they popped when they got very
hot. “I think the balloons are getting
bigger when the temperature is getting
higher.”

He said to himself. “ I wonder what

experiment I could do to find out the
answer and make sure it’s a fair test?” 13
Component 4B:
QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4B)
Q1. What should Gabriel use to
measure the air temperature?

Q2. How should he do to determine

accurately the size of the
balloons?
Q3. What are some of the things that Gabriel needs
to consider to make sure that his experiment is
a fair test?
15
Component 4C:
QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4C)

Q1. How should Gabriel write down all his

measurements?

Q2. What is Gabriel’s aim for the experiment?

Q3. If Gabriel’s experiment works out how he

thought it would, what should he write as his
conclusion?
17
Component 4B:
QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4B)
Q1. What should Gabriel use to measure the air
temperature?

He should use a thermometer.

19
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4B)
Q2. How should he do to determine accurately the
size of the balloons?

He should measure the long and short diameters

(using a ruler), or circumference/s (using a tape
measure).

20
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4B)
Q3. What are some of the things that Gabriel needs
to consider to make sure that his experiment is
a fair test?
 All the balloons he is using must be the same type and the same
size to begin with.
 He must use the same method to measure size of the balloons
and the same thermometer to measure the temperature each time.
 He must do the experiment all on the same day so that the
weather conditions are the same for all the measurements.
 He could keep some balloons inside to checkthe effects of outside
conditions on balloons.
21
Component 4C:
QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4C)

Q1. How should Gabriel write down all his

measurements?

He should write down his measurements in a

table form.

23
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4C)

Q2. What is Gabriel’s aim for the experiment?

His aim is to prove that balloons expand and

even burst when the temperature rises.

24
QUESTIONS (COMPONENT 4C)
Q3. If Gabriel’s experiment works out how he
thought it would, what should he write as his
conclusion?

In his conclusion he should write that the results

showed that as the temperature increased the size
of the balloons also increased.
