Chapter Outline:
6.3 Understand smart materials

6.4 Understand application of smart materials

DEFINITION OF SMART MATERIALS
 Smart or intelligent materials are materials that have to respond to stimuli
and environment changes and to activate their functions according to these
changes.
 The stimuli like temperature, pressure, electric flow, magnetic flow, light,
mechanical, etc. can originate internally or externally.
CATEGORIES OF SMART MATERIALS:

•Property changing materials

•Energy changing materials
PROPERTY CHANGING MATERIALS

 Smart materials are designed materials that have one or more properties that can
significantly changed in controlled fashion by stimuli such as temperature, shape and
volume.

 Magnetostrictive – materials exhibit change in shape under the influence of

magnetic field and also exhibit change in their
magnetization under the influence of mechanical stress.
 pH-sensitive polymers – materials that change in volume when the pH
surrounding medium changes.
 Magnetocaloric materials – compounds that undergo a reversible change in
temperature upon exposure to a changing
magnetic field.
ENERGY CHANGING MATERIALS

 Smart materials also  can be significantly changed in a controlled

fashion by external stimuli, such as energy power.

 Piezoelectric – materials that produce a voltage when stress is applied.

- designed structures made from these materials can
therefore be made that bend, expand or contract when a voltage is
applied.
 Solar power – form of renewable energy which can be used to help
power your home or business.
- Solar energy Electrical energy
THE APPLICATIONS OF
SMART MATERIALS
• Smart memory alloy (spectacles).
• Thermochromic ink (thermometer).
• Aroma pigment.
SMART MATERIALS
COMMONLY USED IN
INDUSTRY
 PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS:
 Piezoelectric material is squeezed rapidly, it produces a small electrical
voltage for a moment. If a voltage is put across the material it makes a
tiny change in shape.
 Piezoelectric materials are being used for contact sensors for alarm
systems and in microphones and headphones.
 Piezoelectric are also used for ultrasonic welding with high frequency
ultrasonic.
SMART MATERIALS
COMMONLY USED IN
INDUSTRY
 SHAPE-MEMORY ALLOY:
 Alloy that remembers its original shape and that when deformed
returns to its pre-deformed shape when heated.
 SMA find a variety of applications in civil structures such as bridges and
buildings.
 QUANTUM-TUNNELING COMPOSITE:
 Quantum-tunneling composite (QTC) is a flexible polymer which
contains tiny metal particles. It is normally an insulator but if it is
squeezed it becomes a conductor.
 QTC can be used to make membrane switches like those used on mobile
phones, pressure sensors and speed controllers.
