Introduction
 A brushed DC electric motor is an internally commutated electric motor designed
to be run from a direct current power source.
 Brushed DC motors can be varied in speed by changing the operating voltage or
the strength of the magnetic field. Depending on the connections of the field to the
power supply, the speed and torque characteristics of a brushed motor can be
altered to provide steady speed or speed inversely proportional to the mechanical
load.n from a direct current power source.
Problem Statement
 To discover how the motor in a Cordless Hand Drill works and to learn the usage
of different parts in a Brushed DC electric motor.
 To learn the advantages and disadvantages of this type of motor
Brushed DC electric motor
 A Brush DC Motor consists of two magnets
facing the same direction, that surrounding
two coils of wire that reside in the middle of
the Brush DC Motor, around a rotor.
 The coils are positioned to face the
magnets, causing electricity to flow to them
which generates a magnetic field, which
ultimately pushes the coils away from the
magnets they are facing, and causes the
rotor to turn.
 The current shuts off at the rotor and makes
a 180 degree turn, causing each rotor to
face the opposite magnet. As the current
turns on again, the electricity flows
oppositely, sending another pulse that
causes the rotor to turn once again. The
brushes that are located within the Brush
DC Motor turn it off an on when instructed,
by transferring the electricity from the rotor.
Characteristics
 Brushed versions exhibit linear performance characteristics, with very high torque
and a wide speed range
 Produce smooth motion at low speeds and have good speed control
 Brushed designs are also typically smaller and more efficient, as well as lower-
cost, than brushless motors.
Methodology and Design
Part Usage
Stator Provides a magnetic field
that drives the rotating
armature
Armature Transmit current across the
field

Brushes Cconduct electricity to the

individual segments as they
rotate from brush to brush

Commutator Applies electric current to

the windings
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages Disadvantages
Low cost of construction Periodic maintenance is required

Simple and inexpensive controller Poor heat dissipation due to internal rotor
construction
No controller is required for fixed speeds Lower speed range due to mechanical limitations
on the brushes
The ideal for the extreme environment due to the Electrically noisy
lack of electronics
Two-wire control Less efficient

Rebuild new brush for extended life Higher rotor inertia limits the dynamic
characteristics
Circuit

 Field and rotor coil are connected in parallel, which

increases the power of the motor which increases the
speed of the drill.
Conclusion
 To conclude what was said above a Cordless Hand Drill uses a Brushed DC
electric motor. This type of motor fits the device quite well because this type of
motor can control the speed of which the motor will go at.
