INTEL 8089 IOP (INPUT OUTPUT PROCESSOR)

• The Intel 8089 IOP (Input Output Processor) was a dedicated

microprocessor that was developed to handle input/output operations in
a computer system.
• It was designed to be used with the Intel 8086/8088 microprocessors
and was widely used in early personal computers.

3
CASE STUDY

• In the late 1970s, the National Cash Register Corporation (NCR) was
looking for a way to improve the performance of its cash registers.
• At the time, cash registers were essentially electromechanical devices
that used mechanical switches and gears to record transactions.
• The process was slow and error-prone, and there was a growing demand
for faster and more reliable cash registers.

4
CASE STUDY

• NCR turned to Intel and its new 8089 IOP to develop a new generation of
cash registers.
• The 8089 IOP was a powerful microprocessor that could handle
input/output operations much faster than the electromechanical systems
of the time.
• It could also be programmed to perform a variety of tasks, making it
much more versatile than the specialized hardware that was used in
existing cash registers.

5
CASE STUDY

• NCR worked with Intel to develop a custom version of the 8089 IOP that
was tailored to the needs of cash registers.
• The new cash registers used the 8089 IOP to handle input/output
operations, such as managing the cash drawer and printing receipts.
• The IOP could handle these operations in real-time, allowing the CPU to
perform other tasks.

6
CASE STUDY

• The new cash registers were a significant improvement over the old
electromechanical systems.
• They were faster, more reliable, and more versatile.
• They could also be easily programmed to perform a variety of tasks,
such as managing inventory and generating reports.

7
CASE STUDY

• The success of the new cash registers led to a broader adoption of the
Intel 8089 IOP in a variety of other applications, such as point of sale
systems, medical equipment, and industrial control systems.
• The IOP revolutionized input/output operations in early computer
systems and was a crucial component in many early personal computers.

CONCLUSION

• In summary, the case study of NCR's adoption of the Intel 8089 IOP
illustrates how the IOP was used to improve the performance and
reliability of cash registers.

• The IOP's ability to handle input/output operations quickly and

reliably was a significant improvement over the existing
electromechanical systems, and its versatility allowed it to be used in
a variety of other applications as well.
