LIGHT

AND
SHADOW

Grade 6
LIGHT
• The energy or
brightness from the
sun, a lamp, etc. that
allows you to see things
Where does light come from?

Our major
light source:
the Sun
Where else does light come from?
Sorting light sources
Natural vs. Man-made (artificial)
Light Source

Fireflies Glow worm

Are these light sources?

moon mirror
water
These items are not light sources, instead they
are reflecting light from other sources.
Not source of light /
Reflect light only
Luminous and Non-luminous objects
A luminous A non-luminous
object is one object is one
that produces that reflects
light. light.
There are 3 types of materials
• Transparent materials let light pass through them in
straight lines
 Glass
 Clear Plastic
• Translucent materials let some light to pass through
them
 Butter paper
 Frosted glass
• Opaque materials do not let any light pass through
them
 Wood
 Metals
Characteristics of light

LIGHT TRAVELS IN LIGHT CAN BE

STRAIGHT LINE REFLECTED
Properties of Light

• Light travels in a straight line:

Laser
Light Travels in a Straight Line
SHADOW
A shadow is made when an object blocks light.

Light travels in a straight line, so if it is blocked

there must be shadow formed
 The object must be opaque or translucent to
make a shadow.
 A transparent object will not make any
shadow, as light will pass straight through it.
Shadow made by
sun
In the morning, the Sun is low in
the sky and casts a long shadow
Midday - The Sun is above the tree
and casts a short shadow
In the Evening, the Sun is low in
the sky and casts a long shadow
What changes the
size of the shadow?

• If an object is moved
closer to the light
source, the shadow gets
bigger.
• If an object is
moved further
away from the light
source, the shadow
gets smaller
Size and Shape of
Shadow
The size of a shadow can be changed by
changing :
• Distance between the light source and
the object
• Distance between the object and the
screen
What is the difference between
your shadow and your image in a
mirror ?

When we stand facing away from the Sun,

we see our shadows on the ground in
front of us.

THEN WHAT IS AN IMAGE?

HOW DOES IT FORM?
Bouncing/Reflection of Light

When you look at mirror, you

see your image in the mirror .
The light from a light source falls
on you. This light is reflected
into the mirror and the mirror
reflects the image into your eyes
We see things because they reflect light
into our eyes.

Homework
How does the moon reflect light
Why can’t we see objects in the dark?
Because there is no light. Light falls on the object.

Light is sent back from

the object and enters the
eyes.

We can see objects only when there is light.

The reflection of light can
be shown in the form of
a ray diagram.

We can see light around us because light

from a source is reflected by object
Reflection
of light is
very
important in
everyday
life

Some objects reflect light

better than others. Mirrors
and aluminium foils are good
reflectors o. f light because
their surfaces are smooth and
shiny

CONCLUSION :
1. Light travels in a straight line.
2. A shadow is formed when light is blocked by an opaque or
translucent object.
3. The size of shadow changes according to :
 Distance between object and light source
 Distance between screen and object
4. The shape of a shadow change according :
 The position of the light source
 The position of the object
5. Light can be reflected.
6. We can see an object because light from a light source that falls
onto the object is reflected by object onto our eyes.
