Lesson- 03
Learning Objectives:
Learners will be able to,

• identify how shadows are formed?

• identify factors affecting the size and position of the shadow of an object
• use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why?
• shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them
• recognise differences between shadows and reflection
• know how a periscope work
Recapitulation
• natural and artificial sources of light
• light travels from a source and travels in a straight line
• the law of reflection
• shiny surfaces reflect light better than dull surfaces
• regular and diffuse reflection
• materials as transparent, translucent and opaque
Identify how shadows are formed?

• Shadows are made by blocking

light. Light rays travel from a
source in straight lines. If an
opaque (solid) object gets in the
way, it stops light rays from
traveling through it. This results
in an area of darkness appearing
behind the object.
Why are shadows formed?
Shadows are made by blocking light.
Light rays travel from a source in
straight lines. If an opaque (solid)
object gets in the way, it stops light
rays from traveling through it. ... The
size and shape of a shadow depend
on the position and size of the light
source compared to the object
Factors affecting the size and position
of the shadow of an object:
The size of a shadow depends on the
distance between the light source and
the object that blocks that light source AND
the size of the object. If you have two
people standing side-by-side outside on a
sunny day, the distance to the sun is the
same for both people.
Shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them

Shadows are the same shape as the objects which cast them because light travels in straight

lines.

Differences between shadows and reflection
Shadows and reflections are the
effects of light. Shadows are
formed when objects block a
source of light. Night is caused by
the Earth blocking the light from the
Sun - on the half of the Earth
in shadow it is night
time. ... Reflections are caused by
light bouncing off objects.
