LIGHT, SHADOW

AND REFLECTION

Class 6 CBSE
• Light is a form of energy.
• Object which gives light is called sources of light.
• sources of light can be NATURAL and ARTIFICIAL

Sun, Stars, Fire, firefly etc. Candle, light bulb, laser etc.

Luminous object Object that gives out or emit light of their

own are called luminous object.

Non-Luminous object Object that do not gives out or emit light of their own are called
Non-luminous object.

SHADOWS
Shadow is a dark area obtained on a screen where the light from a light source is
blocked by an opaque object.

The things necessary for the formation of a shadow are:

1. A source of light
2. An opaque object whose shadow has to be formed
3. A screen on which shadow is to be formed
• Shadows give us some information about shapes of objects.

Sometimes,
shadows can also mislead us about the
shape of the object.

• LIGHT TRAVELL IN A STRAIGHT LINE

That is why, when opaque objects obstruct it, a
shadow forms.
A PINHOLE CAMERA
A Pinhole camera is a simple device that form an image without using a lens or a mirror.

cover the cut with tracing
small hole
paper

Properties of image formed by pin hole camera-

• Image formed by pin hole camera is inverted (upside down)
• Image formed is smaller than the object.
• Image formed is colored.
REFLECTION
When a ray of light falls on any object (polished, smooth,
shiny object), light from that object bounces back, and this
bouncing back of light is called reflection.
