HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

IN MOVEMENT EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
CREATORS OF A NEW IDEA:
MOVEMENT EDUCATION IN THE 1800S TO
EARLY 1900S

FRANCOIS DELSARTE LISELOTT DIEM RUDOLF VON LABAN

FRANCOIS DELSARTE
Francois Delsarte, a 19th-century
Frenchman, was an early proponent of
movement ideas. Influenced by
Romanticism, he emphasized
expression of thought and emotion.
Delsarte introduced applied aesthetics
and focused on the arts, highlighting
the link between mind, body, and spirit.
He saw movement as a blend of time
space, and motion, stressing the
importance of movements toward and
away from the body’s center.
LISELOTT DIEM

In the 1930s, Professor Liselott Diem

and her husband founded Deutsche
Sporthoschule Koln in Germany to train
teachers in sport and physical
education. They promoted a natural
approach to teaching movement to
children, encouraging them to explore
an develop their unique movement
abilities at different stages of
development.
RUDOLF VON LABAN

Rudolf von Laban, a pioneer of

movement education (1879-1958),
introduced the concept of effort in his
theory of movement. He distinguished
between expressive movement for
artistic communication and functional
movement for everyday tasks, like
sports. Laban’s four movement factors
(weight, time, flow) formed the
foundation of movement education.
