LOGARITHMS
WHY WAS IT INTRODUCED?
• Logarithms were introduced by John Napier in 1614 as
a means of simplifying calculations

• Logarithms are another way of thinking about

exponents.

WHAT IS IT?
• Logarithm is the inverse function to exponentiation
• The function is defined as:
f(x) = , a > 0, a ≠ 1
• 2 main types of logarithms:
1. Natural logarithmic function – base “e”
2. Common logarithmic function – base “10”
