First Aid of Common Unintentional Injuries
Unintentional injuries cannot be avoided. It
happens at any time, at any
place to anybody. We must therefore practice
safety awareness at all times.
But when injuries happen, appropriate
knowledge and skills of the proper
application of first aid could greatly help in
alleviating pain, preventing further
injury, prolonging and even save lives.
First Aid- is the first and
immediate assistance given to
any person suffering from
either a minor or serious
illness or injury, with care
provided to preserve life,
prevent the condition from
worsening, or promote
recovery.
● Fracture is a break or crack in a bone.
An open fracture pieces the skin
surface while in a closed fracture, the skin
above is intact.
First Aid:
o Check vital signs.
o Do not move the injured part.
o Stop bleeding if there is any.
o If you have to move the person,
immobilize the broken part by splinting.
o Seek medical help immediately.
● Dislocation- displacement of
one or more bones at a joint.
First Aid:
o Call for help immediately.
o Splint the affected part. Do not
try to move a dislocated part or
force it back into place.
o Apply ice on the injured part
to reduce swelling.
● Strain is an injury to the
muscles which is a result of
improper use of the muscles.
● Sprain- is an injury to the
muscles which is the result of
improper use of muscles.
First Aid:
o Rest the injured part.
o Apply ice.
o Compress the injured part.
o Elevate the injured part.
● Heat Exhaustion is caused by
loss of salt and water due to
excessively high temperature.
This may lead to heatstroke and
even death.
First Aid:
o Transport a victim to a cool
place.
o Give him /her plenty of water.
o Check for vital signs.
o Seek medical help
● Choking results when foreign object blocks the
throat.
First Aid:
o Ask the person if he is choking, and encourage
him/her to cough.
o When the person cannot speak or stops
coughing, give him five back blows. Stand
behind him and help him lean forward. Support
his chest with one hand, and give five sharp
blows between the shoulder blades with the heel
of your hand.
o If back blows fail, try abdominal thrusts, stand
behind the person and put your arms around
the upper part of his abdomen. Clench your fist
with thumbs inward. Place it between the navel
and the bottom of the breastbone.
o Check his mouth. If obstruction is not cleared,
repeat the back blows and abdominal thrusts
If obstruction still has not cleared, call for an
ambulance. Continue until help arrives.
● Heart attack is caused by a sudden
obstruction of blood to the part of the
heart muscles.
First Aid:
o Help the person sit or lie down with
their head elevated.
o Call for medical help.
o If the person is conscious, give
him/her a full dose aspirin and advise
him/her to chew it slowly.
o Constantly monitor the vital signs, be
prepared to give rescue breaths and
chest compression.
● Chemical Burns may occur when electricity
passes through the body.
First Aid:
o Make sure that contact with the electrical
source is broken.
o Flood sites of injury at the entry and the exit
points of the current with plenty of cold water,
o Wear disposable gloves and place a sterile
dressing or a bandage over the burn to protect it
from airborne infection.
o Call for medical help.
o Reassure the victim and treat for shock.
The Victim- This group of students
will create a scenario highlighting
one unintentional common injury to
be executed/role-play and to be
explained.
The Rescuers- This group of
students will rescue the victim
demonstrating the appropriate first
aid for the injury. While doing it
he/she will explain step-by-step
process of the first aid he/she
applied.
The Doctors- This group of students
will further give medical support to
the victim and will explain what
injury does the victim have its causes
and what part of body/bone was
being damaged.
The Salamat Doc Anchors- This group
of students will interview the doctors for
the injury incident happened and what
appropriate first aid should be applied.
He/She will also reflect the importance of
proper ways of first aid and how does it
prolong or save one’s life.
Salamat Doc Segment
The segment “Salamat Doc” will start with the victim creating a scenario
about unintentional injury, then it will be followed by the rescuer who will
demonstrate proper first aid procedures for the injury and will call an
immediate help of the doctors for further medical help and the Salamat Doc
anchors will interview the doctor and the rescuer explaining what injury does
the victim have and the steps of first aid being applied to the victim. Lastly,
the Salamat doc anchors will reflect the importance of proper technique in
applying first aid to an injured person to prolong life, with an ended tagline “
