Definition of Democracy

Democracy is not merely a form of government. It is also a form of a state as


well as a society. It is strongly associated with participation, competition, and
civil and political liberties. Making it the order of society. The term ‘democracy’
comes from the Greek word demokratia which means “rule of the people”. It
was coined from two words: demos that means “people” and Kratos which
refers to “power”. That is, in a democracy the power rests with the people.
Thus, literally means rule by the people, exercised either directly or through
elected representative. Led by Cleisthenes, Athenians established what is
generally held as the first democracy in 508–507 BC. Cleisthenes is referred
to as "the father of Athenian democracy”.
Features of Democracy

2 Major Types of Democracies
Direct Democracy is based on the Ancient
form of government, refers to the rule of the
people, who directly participates in all
government activities. Citizens participate
directly in either holding office or making
policy (laws) as well as govern themselves.

representative or republican democracy was

defend their interests in the government.
