STOPPING SIGHT

DISTANCE -
SEATWORK
Stopping sight distance – is the distance required
to see an object 150 mm high on the roadway.

The stopping sight distance s depends on the reaction of the driver (including both perception time and the time required to
react physically) and the braking distance of the vehicle. That is,

s = dr +db

Where dr = the distance traveled during the driver’s reaction time
db = the braking distance

The distance traveled during the reaction time of the driver is just the speed of the vehicle times the reaction time, or

dr = vtr

where v = design speed

tr = driver’s reaction time (including perception time)
Formula

s = vt s = dr + db
v2 = v1 + at D=
s = v1t + ½ at2
v22 = v12 + 2as

1. A vehicle moving at 40 kph was stopped by
applying brakes and the length of the skid marks
was 12.2 m. If the average skid resistance of the
level pavement is known to be 0.70, determine
the brake efficiency of the test vehicle?
2. A driver travelling at 70 kph sees a stalled car
30 m ahead. If the driver applies the brakes
immediately (perception reaction time is zero)
and begins slowing the vehicle at 8 m/sec2. How
far from the stalled car will the car stops to
avoid hitting the stalled vehicle?
3. A driver traveling at 50 mph is 80 m from a wall
ahead. If the driver applies the brakes
immediately, PIEV time is 2 seconds and begins
slowing the vehicle. If the distance from the
stopping point to the wall 10.28 m, find the
deceleration of the car.
4. A driver traveling at 50 mph is 80 from a wall ahead. If
the driver applies the brakes immediately and begins
slowing the vehicle at 10 m/sec2 (decelerating), find the
PIEV time when the distance of the car from the wall when
it stop is 10.28 m.
5. Compute the total distance that a car had traveled from the
time the driver sees a hazard when he is traveling at a speed
of 75 kph. Perception time is 2 seconds and the average skid
resistance is equal to 0.6. Assume the car has an efficiency of
80%.
