AC measurement using PMMC
PMCC with AC
• Pointer will change its direction after every
half cycle
• It will only happen when the frequency is less
than 0.1Hz
• At 60Hz, the inertia of movement will prevent
the pointer to follow the changing current
• So it will remain at zero

• Design Voltage is given in rms
• Diode voltage drop is
subtracted from peak voltage
• PMMC deflection is
proportional to average current

• To measure high currents safely we use current transformer which steps
down current.
• The secondary coil has many turns as compared to primary.
• A simple arrangement could be secondary coil wound around the current
carrying conductor like clamp meter.
