HANDTOOLS AND TEST

EQUIPMENTS
Basic
Handtools
A hand tool is any tool that is powered by hand
rather than a motor.
Portable power tools are not HANDTOOLS.

THEORIES/PRINCIPLES
Electronics and Electrical work require the use of a variety of hand tools
and equipment. Some of these tools are fairly common and are used in many
tasks.

Others are tools that are specially designed for use in soldering, cutting,
boring, enlargement of holes, cable splicing, etc.
Standard Screw Drivers – there are many sizes of screwdrivers. The
length determines the particular use of the tool and the size of the blade
is determined by the size of the screw to be tightened or loosened.
There are two basic type of screwdrivers.
Flat Blade or Standard Screw Driver – are commonly used for
mounting tube sockets and other parts of the chassis. All screwdrivers
used in electrical and electronic works are insulated by plastic or
hardwood handle.
Philip Screw Driver– is made with a specially shaped blade that fits
cross-slots screws. The tip has two slots cut across the center of the
screwdriver.

Long Needle Nose Plier – a plier which has long slender jaws for
reaching into hard-to-get-tight places and is also used to hold small
parts wires or hardware.
Long Chain Nose Plier – is used for
bending and forming fine wires and
holding small parts.

Electrician’s Standard Side Cutting

Plier– is used in general repair work
like electrical works for cutting heavy
and light gauge wire.
Diagonal Cutting Plier – is used only for cutting wires.

Mechanical Wire
Strippers – these tools
are used to strip the
insulation from a wire.

Adjustable Self-Adjustable
Thermal Wire Strippers – these
tools are used heat a wire to strip
insulation from the wires. With
this type of stripper, there is no
chance of nicking the wire.
Soldering Iron and Soldering Gun– soldering iron is ready to be used
after a few seconds after being turned on. A soldering gun uses power
only during work. It has a thin tip that is ideal for working a crowded
television or radio chassis.
Anti-Wicking Tool – is used to
prevent solder from running under
the insulation on a wire.

Heat Sink– is used to direct the

heat away from the component
when soldering. Sometimes
heatsink also serves as an anti-
wicking tool.
Component Lead Cleaner– is used
in cleaning the components leads to
be soldered. The tip of this tool is
made from copper braid.

Solder Sucker – is used to remove the soldering lead

in the printed circuit board.

Wire Gauge – is used to measure the size of the conductors.
Basic Test
equipments
Tube Tester – used to test electron tubes.
However, it should not be depended upon
exclusively for complete accuracy of the
tester.

CRT Tester – check the performance of

the CRT. Also, it usually contains a
“restorer” circuit. The restorer circuit
prolongs the life of the CRT by its ability
to rejuvenate the CRT.
Transistor Tester – fairly accurate checkers
of diodes and transistors. They also have the
capability of checking the performance of
these components “in” or “out”.

Capacitor Tester – not only

check the quality of the
capacitor but also determine
the value of unknown
capacitors.
Frequency Counter – is used to measure the
frequency in hertz of an electronic product.
Frequency counters are often used to adjust
the frequency of radio receivers and
transmitters.

Color Generator – produces various

test pattern which can be used in
analyzing and converging color
television.
