Introduction

This course uses the concept of gender to examine a range of topics and disciplines
that include feminism, gay and lesbian studies, women’s studies, popular culture,
and politics. Throughout the course, students examine the intersection of gender
with other social identifiers: class, race, sexual orientation, culture, and ethnicity.
Students read about, write about, and discuss gender issues as they simultaneously
reflect on the ways that gender has manifested in and influenced their lives.

Influence of Society Views on
Gender Identity
• Gender identity is the personal conception of being a man or a
woman and the society creates standards and comes up with
gender roles basing them on existing norms and traditions
which will in turn influence gender identity.
• For instance, most societies associate strength and dominance
to be masculine roles while caring and assisting or
subordination known to be feminine roles.

Legal Basis for the study of Gender
and Society
Gender equality is achieved when both sexes enjoy the same rights
and opportunities across society, including access to justice and to
economic and social gains. The study stressed that sustainable
development goals cannot be achieved without ensuring gender
equality in law and practice.
