TECHNOLOGICAL

ADVANCEMENTS ENHANCE
THE QUANTITY OF
EDUCATION, NOT
NECESSARILY THE QUALITY.
NICHOLAS PAPPALARDO
CANDIDATE #1486
DIFFERENTIATION

• Brian Ardolf: Advancing technology is creating an over-abundance of unnecessary waste

• Increase the recyclability of technology
• Jeron Azeez: Mass production of new technologies is hurting the quality and pay of
formerly prosperous jobs
• Limit availability of technology to companies, so there is still a need for human workers
• Ved Siewrattan: The speed at which technology is advancing is outpacing human
development to an unhealthy extent
• Raise awareness for the health of the future generation of technology users.
THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION IS TAKING A
TOLL DUE TO RAPID ADVANCEMENTS IN
TECHNOLOGY
• Schools now depend on technology to teach their students. Times are
changing along with technology and are forcing schools to adapt to new ways
to teach their students.
• These new ways are NOT enhancing the quality of students education, they
are only increasing the number of ways teachers can teach their students.
• My solution is to slow down on the advancements on technology and
improve the advancements of teaching at school with what we already have
• Pass rates increase due to the easy access technology
• Requirements to pass have been made a lot easier
with the use of new technology
• COVID-19 left a stain of the use of new technology
in schools
THE LOCAL
PROBLEM
THE LOCAL PROBLEM CONT…

• Students test scores do not align with the high pass

rates
• “The thresholds for 8th grade reading scores are:
basic (243), proficient (281) and advanced (323).
The average scale score for Florida in 2022 was
260, down from 263 in 2019.
• Just 26% of Florida 8th graders were considered at
least proficient in reading, and a mere 3 percent
were considered advanced.”
THE GLOBAL PROBLEM

• Teachers are having a hard time keeping up with all the drastic changes with educational and
technology tools.
• “many schools do not provide enough training on how to use technology in the classroom” (5 reasons teachers
are hesitant to adopt to technology in the classroom)

• Easy access to information using school issued devices is inspiring cheating

• Replacing the use of paper with devices such as tablets and laptops is leading to the
extinction of good handwriting
• EXPENSIVE!!
• Internet speed is NOT universal
and varies a lot

• Education is becoming an
advantage in other countries as
opposed to others (In terms of
technology)
• The Program for International Student Assessment
(PISA) is an international assessment that measures
15-year-old students' reading, mathematics, and
PISA science literacy every 3 years
(PROGRAM • "many of the top 10 scoring countries and regions on
FOR the PISA test, such as Singapore, Shanghai, and
INTERNATION China are cautious about giving computers to
AL STUDENT students during the school day.” (Hechinger Report)
ASSESSMENT
SOLUTIONS
TAKE 1 STEP BACK TO MOVE 2 STEPS
FORWARD
• Allow both teachers and students to perform at their own pace. (In terms of
technological advancements)
• Use technology that is necessary for teaching the curriculum and not technology that
creates shortcuts.
• Example: Teach students to solve math problems with a basic calculator other than
giving them the ability to use a online program
SOLUTIONS

• Students should go back to paper based material to an extent. Allowing the creation
of good handwriting and less possibility of carpel tunnel.
• Writing notes are more memorable instead of typing.
• Decrease the possibility of cheating
• Schools can spend more time allowing teachers to use the technology they have
other than forcing them to adapt to new technology.
• “Perhaps, it’s best to invest the computer money, into hiring, paying and training
good teachers.” (Hechinger Report)
