To prevent the bones from coming apart when there is movement,
bones are held together by fibres called LIGAMENTS.
Ligaments join bones to bones.
To prevent the bones from getting worn out when they rub against
each other, they are protected by cartilage.
• A muscle needs a pulling force to stretch it.
• The force is provided by another muscle.
• Two muscles are arranged so that when one
contracts it pulls on other muscle which relaxes
and strengthens.
• For eg, when biceps contract, triceps relax in
the forearm, helping to raise the forearm.
• The action of one muscle produces an opposite
effect on other muscle and causes movement in
the opposite direction. The two muscles are
called antagonistic muscle pair.
• Two more types of muscles :
• Smooth muscles : found in organ systems like digestive systems,it moves
the food along the digestive tract.
• Cardiac muscle : found in heart, it helps to pump the blood around the
body.
