PRESENTATION
USES AND FUNCTION OF
NETWORKING TOOLS AND
MATERIALS
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the used in networking.
2. Recognize cabling tools according to standards.
3. Select the proper networking tools according to
job requirement.
Network tools and materials is used to combine,
split, switch, boost, or direct packets of
information along a computer or
telecommunications network. This product area
includes hubs, switches, routers, bridges,
gateways, multiplexers, transceivers and
firewalls.
Here are some lists of commonly used
networking tools and their uses:
 Cable Crimper – It refers to any of a number of tools that
are used to crimp connectors onto the ends of wire
and/or cable.
 Punch-Down tool - It is used for inserting wire into
insulation-displacement connectors on punch down
blocks, patch panels, keystone modules, and surface
mount boxes.
 Cable Stripper - Are devices used to remove sections of
insulation from underlying wires and prepare cables. for
installation
 Wire Cutter - Are a tool designed specifically for the
purpose of cutting wire.
 Multimeter - Is a measuring instrument that can measure
multiple electrical properties. A typical multimeter can
measure voltage, resistance, and current, in which case
can be used as a voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter.
 Tone Generator - Allows technicians to identify that wire
within a bundle, at a cross-connect, or at a remote end.
 Cable Tester - Is an electronic device used to verify the
electrical connections in a signal cable or other wired
assembly.
 Loopback Adapter - Is a dummy network card that is
used as a testing tool for virtual network environments
where network access is not available or when you want
to isolate your testing network from your main network.
CABLING STANDARDS :
Many network administrators keep hearing this thing that
their network is down because of cabling or some other
reason. Various cabling researches indicate that in many
scenarios, the network is down on account of low-quality
cabling systems.
Structured cabling system technology divides the complete
infrastructure into the controllable blocks and then
structured cabling system attempts to connect these blocks
to produce the high-performance cabling network systems
that almost all companies now rely on.
The benefits of cabling of structured
cabling standards are as follows:

 Consistency of cabling design and installation.

 Conformance to physical & transmission line
requirements.
 A basis for examining a proposed system expansion &
other such changes.
 Uniform documentation
Proper Use of Tools:
Using tools properly helps prevent accidents and damage to
equipment and people. This section describes and covers
the proper use of a variety of hardware, software, and
organizational tools specific to working with computers and
peripherals.
 For every job there is the right tool. Make sure that you are
familiar with the correct use of each tool and that the correct tool
is used for the current task. Skilled use of tools and software
makes the job less difficult and ensures that tasks are performed
properly and safely.
 A toolkit should contain all the tools necessary to complete
hardware repairs. As you gain experience, you learn which tools to
have available for different types of jobs. Hardware tools are
grouped into four categories:
 ESD tools
 Hand tools
 Cleaning tools
 Diagnostic tools
