COMMON DEVICES,TOOLS &

GADGETS USED/APPLIED IN
NETWORK INSTALLATION
FIBER TO ETHERNET CONVERTER

Fiber Ethernet Media Converter, adaptive

and fast Ethernet converter devices.

It can implement data transmission

between twisted pair electrical signals and
optical signals which are the two types of
network connection media.
FIREWALL

Network firewalls are devices that act as

a secure buffer between the inside the
network and the outside the network.
They use special protocols to police all
incoming and outgoing network traffic,
communications, and transactions, to make
sure that malware, viruses, worms, hackers,
and other security threats remain outside.
They also prevent unauthorized access to
the network by other devices or users.
LAYER 3 SWITCH

Layer 3 switch combines the functionality of

a switch and a router.
It acts as a switch to connect devices that
are on the same subnet or virtual LAN at
lightning speeds and has IP routing
intelligence built into it to double up as a
router.
It can support routing protocols, inspect
incoming packets, and can even make routing
decisions based on the source and destination
addresses.
This is how a layer 3 switch acts as both a
switch and a router.
PATCH PANEL

A patch panel in a local area network

(LAN) is a mounted hardware assembly that
contains ports that are used to connect and
manage incoming and outgoing LAN cables.
A patch panel provides a way to keep
large numbers of cables organized, enabling
flexible connectivity into network hardware
located in a data center or an access or wiring
closet.
WLC (WIRELESS LAN CONTROLLER)

A WLAN is a wireless architecture that aims

to meet changing network demands.

A WLAN controller manages wireless

network access points that allow wireless
devices to connect to the network.
LAYER2 SWITCH

A network switch connects devices

within a network and forwards data packets
between them.

Switches increase network efficiency by

using routing information to read the
hardware address of an incoming packet or
signal and send it to the correct device.
ACCESS POINT

What a wireless access point does for us

network is similar to what an amplifier does
for our home stereo.

It takes the bandwidth coming from a

router and stretches it so that many devices
can go on the network from farther distances
away.
LAN CABLE

LAN cable is used to connect devices

within a network.

It is a physical plug connection. Basically,

any data cable that is used for communication
between end devices can be called a network
cable.
RJ-45 connector

The Rj-45 or 8P8C means eight position / eight

conductor.
It refers to a type of modular plug normally used at
the end of Ethernet patch cables, and when attached at the
end of an Ethernet cable it is called a RJ45 8P8C plug.

RJ stands for registered jack while the “45” refers to

the listing number. It is used for connecting
telecommunications or data equipment.
COMMON TOOLS&GADGETS
USED IN NETWORK
INSTALLATION
RJ45 CRIMPING

An RJ45 crimping tool is a device used in

the networking system.

It is a good helper for you to crimp and

terminate RJ45 plugs.

An RJ45 crimping tool is a special device

for the installation of different cabling
systems.
PUNCHDOWN TOOL

A punch down tool, which can also be

referred to as a krone tool, is a hand tool that
is used to connect the wires within an
Ethernet cable to one of the following:
 Patch panel
 Punch down block
 Keystone module
 Surface mount box
The name “punch down” is given as
the wires are punched into place under force.
When the tool is used to connect a wire,
the blade is used to cut off the excess wire
and leave a neat and tidy installation.
WIRE STRIPPER

A wire stripper is also a hand tool and is

designed to remove the protective covering
from an Ethernet cable, exposing the inner
wires.
SCREWDRIVER SET

These have interchangeable heads but are

manually operated. The main benefits are
flexibility and less clutter in your toolbox.
WIRE CUTTERS

They are most commonly used to cut copper

(Ethernet cable is made of copper), iron, brass,
aluminum and steel wire.
CRIMP TOOL

A crimp tool looks similar to a pair of pliers but is

actually used to conjoin two pieces of metal by
deforming one, or sometimes both, of them in such
a way that it causes them to hold each other.

The result of this process is known as a crimp,

hence the name of the tool.
CABLE TESTER

A cable tester is a device used to test both the strength

and connectivity of a particular type of cable.
CABLE TRAYS

Cable trays are mechanical support systems that

provide a rigid structural system for electrical cables,
raceways, and insulated conductors used for electric
power distribution, control, signal instrumentation, and
communication.
OTHER COMMON LAB
TOOLS
SPANNER

wrench, also called spanner, tool, usually

operated by hand, for tightening bolts and nuts..
CABLE TIES

A cable tie (also known as a hose tie, zip tie, or

tie wrap) is a type of fastener for holding items
together, primarily electrical cables and wires.
CALIPER, FISCHER

caliper, also spelled calliper, measuring

instrument that consists of two adjustable legs or
jaws for measuring the dimensions of material
parts.
MULTIMETER

Multimeter is a tester used to measure electrical voltage, current, resistance

and so on.

Mustimeters are mainly of two types, analog and digital. Both are used for
measuring and fault detection in electrical circuits.

ANALOG MULTIMETER
The analog multimeter measures the current with the help of the micro
ammeter inside and moves the needle on the indicator in a graduated scale.

DIGITAL MULTIMETER
Digital mustimeters consists of digital counter and LCD display instead
of moving needle and ruler. Digital millimeters.
The black probe connects to the black port and is used as a common
port.
The red probe is attached to one of the other connection points according
to the desired function (such as current or voltage measurement).
SCISSORS

Scissors are hand-operated shearing tools.

A pair of scissors consists of a pair of metal blades pivoted so that the
sharpened edges slide against each other when the handles (bows) opposite
to the pivot are closed.
TONE GENERATOR TOOL

A tone generator is a great tool for troubleshooting that features single

or multi-tone signals.

It produces sounds artificially, by converting electrical signals into

sounds. Depending on your application, the tone generator can suit to
your requirements with varying levels of sound output from different
models.
