Our health - and that
of our planet -
depends on how
cities are designed.
Urban life poses
challenges that push
us to rethink how we
plan urban
environments.
• “If the purpose of urban planning is not for
human health, then what is it for?”

Dr. Maria Neira WHO Director, Department of Environment,

Climate Change and Health.
• Many cities face health threats linked to urban
planning.
• Infectious diseases thrive in overcrowded
cities, or where there is inadequate access to
clean water, sanitation and hygiene facilities;
living in unhealthy environments killed 12.6
million people in 2012 and air pollution killed
7 million people in 2016.
Healthy urban planning is about planning for
people.
• It means putting the needs of people and
communities at the heart of the urban
planning process and considering the
implications of decisions for human health
and well-being.

Urbanization: a problem for the
rich and the poor?
Social Welfare Services

Urbanization has long been associated with

human development and progress, but recent
studies have shown that urban settings can also
lead to significant inequalities.

Social welfare includes healthcare, empowerment,

housing and other programs geared towards assisting
the poor, unemployed and marginalized in society.
The Department of Social Welfare and
Development (DSWD) is the primary
government agency mandated to develop,
implement, and coordinate social protection and
poverty reduction solutions for and with the
poor, vulnerable, and disadvantaged
