Introduction
Introduction
Math anxiety is a feeling of aversion to
mathematics that involves tension and even
fear of having to perform mathematical
calculations or solve problems.

The symptoms of math anxiety are analogous

to the symptoms of generalized anxiety
disorder or social anxiety disorder listed in the
DSM-V but, in this case, the object of the
sufferer's fear is the moment of facing a
situation in which mathematics must be used.
What is mathematical anxiety?

According to several studies in the

United States, approximately 17%
17% of adults have an elevated level of
math anxiety

31% of PISA students report feeling

very high stress when performing
31% math problems

Causes and consequences

The problems of mathematical anxiety in teachers and students
Causes
Contrary to what one might think, actual ability is not related to mathematical anxiety.
That is, having mathematical anxiety does not imply having a low capacity for logical-
mathematical reasoning.

Causes of math anxiety:

Self-fulfilling prophecy and

Consequences
Within the school context, one of the
most influential factors is the degree of
teacher confidence in dealing with
mathematics.
When the student with math anxiety
obtains a low result in his academic
performance, he thus confirms the
self-fulfilling prophecy of "I am bad at
math".
If the math teacher has math anxiety
relationship, they will (indirectly)
transmit this to their students.
This will again contribute to their
mathematical anxiety, which will again
reduce their performance, thus
creating a low self-concept, culminating
in learned helplessness: "I am not
good at it, so I don't make an effort".

The importance of teacher training
Final thoughts
In addition to identifying math anxiety in
the student and addressing it, teacher
training is important. If a primary
school tutor who has to teach
mathematics has mathematical anxiety,
they will transmit this same feeling to
their students.
The most interesting thing is to apply
math anxiety reduction measures in
the classroom and, at the same time, to
implement training programs for
primary school teachers aimed at
reducing their math anxiety.
