Mental health is a way of describing social and emotional
well-being. Good mental health is central to your healthy
development. It is associated with:
 feeling happy and positive about yourself and enjoying
life
 healthy relationships with family and friends
 participation in physical activity and eating a healthy diet
 the ability to relax and to get a good night’s sleep
community participation and belonging.
Characteristics of Mentally Healthy People
• High self-esteem-people who know their worth, have self-respect, and
• confident in their abilities.
• Realistic-able to see things as they are and deal with it in a practical way.
• Altruistic-unselfish, showing disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others
• Social Competence-the development of a positive and supportive relationship with
different type of people.
• Optimistic-hopeful and confident about the future.
• Creativity-the use of the imagination or original ideas
• Open-mindedness-welcoming new ideas, arguments, and information that you
typically do not align with.
• Authenticity-the quality of being genuine or real.
Having a good mental health:
• If you have good mental health, you might have
emotions including happiness, love, joy and
compassion, and you feel generally satisfied
with life. You are also likely to feel like you
belong to a community and are making a
contribution to society.
Symptoms of poor mental health according to Mangal
(2007) include the following:

• emotionally unstable and easily upset


• apprehensive, suspicious and insecure
• self-critical, empowered with a feeling of guilt
• lack of self-confidence and willpower
• failure in setting a proper level of aspiration
• unrealistic attitude towards life and people
What affects mental health?
The following factors could potentially result in a period of poor mental
health:
• childhood abuse,
• trauma, or neglect
• social isolation or loneliness
• experiencing discrimination
• social disadvantage
• poverty or debt.
