APPRECIATION
 An ability to understand the worth, quality, or
importance of something having a full of
awareness or understanding of something.
 GLENN (1936) – Noted
that it is an “Effort to
give music meaning in
the lives of the children.
There is not one single
way to define what
music appreciation is.”
POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN CAREFULLY
PLANNING FOR ACTIVITIES OF ENGENDERING
MUSIC APPRECIATION
1. Music appreciation is all about nurturing a desirable
attitude toward music, fostering a love for the craft.
2. It is understanding for enjoyment.
3. Create activities where students can learn skills and
with pleasure.
4. Activities must be tied with the child’s interest.
5. Activities must be aimed such that student gain
recognition, compare and contrast musical details.
6. Extensive use of listening, singing, rhythms, body
movements, dancing and creating music.
7. Listening activities must be always guided, teaching
student what to listen for in the music.
8. Multicultural Education – expose students to a wide,
diverse range of music styles.
9. Early exposure to good listening material should be
established.
10. Perfection is not always a goal.
LISTENING
OBJECTIVES
 Keep in mind that listening is central and
indispensable in teaching music.
 Learning the difference between hearing and
listening; and
 Identify some practical techniques when giving
out listening activities.
LISTENING
 give one's attention to a sound.
 take notice of and act on what someone says;
respond to advice or a request.
 make an effort to hear something; be alert and
ready to hear something.
TECHNIQUES TO REMEMBER WHEN
GIVING OUT LISTENING EXAMPLES:
 Bea good listening model.
 Ask questions and give comments.
 Repetition is key.
