Indonesia is located between the collision of 3 major tectonic plates including Eurasia, Indo-
Australia and Pacific plates.
Indonesia’s tectonic
settings resulted in abundant natural
PASICIC resources including geological hazard,

Strategic Issues – Upcoming Program
• The geological agency provides geothermal geoscientific data
• The geology agency supports the government's program to achieve the energy mix target of 23%
renewable energy by 2025, or about 7,500 Mwe from geothermal energy. The Geological Agency has and
will conduct a geothermal survey, the results of which will be used for the proposal for a Geothermal
Working Area (WKP) which is then designated as a WKP by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources
for development
• To accelerate Indonesia's geothermal development and reduce risks on the upstream side, the government
through the Government Drilling program provides Geothermal Data and Information to exploration
drilling. The Geological Agency plays a role in the program as a member of the Joint Committee and
provides input and supervision on technical matters.
• The Geological Agency assists local governments in geothermal development for direct use through the
provision of data and technical guidance.
• Metallurgical Coal to Increase State Revenue
• Rare Earth Element in Coal to support the mineral and coal downstream program
• Gasification and DME for Coal added value enhancement
• “Underground Coal gasification” and Coal methane gas for energy diversification and provision of national
strategic energy reserves
• Cooperating for the implementation of the mapping of peatland prone to fire
36
36
Strategic Issues – Upcoming Program
• Cooperating with BRG for the implementation of the mapping of peatland prone to fire
• Carrying out IKN surveys for mapping vulnerable coal
• The Geological Agency cooperates to develop the potential for Coal Downstream
• Investigation of potential rare earth metals (LTJ/REE)
• Investigation of nickel-cobalt potential in low grade nickel laterite, which has so far been untapped
(estimated at 8.6 billion tons)
• Assist the provincial government in providing guidance to small-scale gold mines (PESK), so that they
become legal so that the government can help collect data on resources and process them without using
mercury.
• Investigation of Non-Metal Minerals for Fertilizer Raw Materials (Dolomite, Agricultural Lime,
phosphate, kiserite, leucite)
• Preparation of potential mineral resources to support the program to increase value added and
downstream of small-scale mining minerals
• Investigation of Non-metallic Minerals for the preparation of potential raw materials for the New
Renewable Energy (EBT) Industry (Graphite, Silica, Kaolin)
• Continuing ongoing collaborative activities with SOEs for the discovery of new sources of Au-Cu and REE
commodities, the Ministry of Defense for 9 strategic minerals for the defense industry, China Geological
Survey (CGS), China for the preparation of mineral prospect areas.
