OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson learners are

expected to:
a. determine the hinge theorem and its
converse.
b. identify if the theorem used is the
hinge theorem or its converse.
c. appreciate the use of hinge theorem in
real-life situation.
1. Suppose you and one of your friends,
Bryan, are walking through inside the
hospital to get a vaccination shot against
COVID-19 virus and you come across a
trap door. You enter first the door and the
length of opening is large enough for you to
fit in. Bryan, who is taller and larger than
you, then goes second and has to open the
door a bit wider so that he could go in.
You Bryan
2. Now suppose an alligator is
hungry and decides to eat two
fishes of different size. The
smaller fish is the red fish and
the bigger is the orange fish.
Hinge Theorem and Its
Converse
Hinge Theorem/ SAS Inequality Theorem
If two sides of a triangle are congruent to two sides of another triangle
and the included angle of the first is larger than the included angle of the
second, then the third side of the first triangle is longer than the third side of
the second triangle.

Hinge Theorem Converse/ SSS Inequality Theorem
If two sides of a triangle are congruent to two sides of another triangle
and the third side of the first is longer than the third side of the second, then
the included angle in the first triangle is greater than the included angle in the
second triangle.

Direction: Complete the statement below by writing >, < or =. Identify which
theorem is used (Hinge Theorem or its converse).
1. In ΔFAR and ΔDOG
AR≅OG and FR≅DG
∠R ∠G
2. AR BK
3. In ΔTOR and ΔBIG
TO≅BI and ON≅IG
TN BG
4. ∠A ∠D
5. XB ZB
Direction: Complete the statement below by writing >, < or =. Identify which
theorem is used (Hinge Theorem or its converse).
1. In ΔFAR and ΔDOG
AR≅OG and FR≅DG
∠R ∠G
∠R > ∠G, Hinge theorem converse
2. AR BK
AR > BK, Hinge theorem
3. In ΔTOR and ΔBIG
TO≅BI and ON≅IG
TN BG
TN < BG, Hinge theorem
4. ∠A ∠D
∠A > ∠D, Hinge theorem converse
5. XB ZB
XB < ZB, Hinge theorem
Seatwork
Direction: Perform what is indicated in the following situations.
1. Doctors use a straight-leg-raising test to determine the amount of
pain felt in a person’s back. The patient lies flat on the examining
table, and the doctor raises each leg until the patient experiences
pain in the back area. Nathan can tolerate the doctor raising his
right leg 35° and his left leg 65° from the table. Which leg can
Nathan raise higher above the table? Justify your answer.
2. Two groups of bikers leave the same camp heading in opposite
directions. Each group travels 2 miles then changes direction
and travels 1.2 miles. Group A due east and then turns 450
towards north. Group B starts due west and then turns 300
toward south. Which group is farther from camp? Justify your
answer using an illustration.
