Definitions: Confined Space

Why?

 Prevent common fatalities

Schlumberger Private
 Set up a uniform system
 To enforce a practice commonly ignored

Confined Space:
 Large enough to permit entry (wholly or
partially ) and perform work

 Limited or restricted Entry/Exit

 Not Designed for continuous occupation

 Excavations and Trenches (> 4 feet deep)
 Sewers
 Sumps

Schlumberger Private
 Storage tanks
 Well Cellars
 Diked areas (> 4 feet tall)
 Silos (mud, chemicals, grain, etc.)

Confined Space hazard

Potentially Hazardous atmosphere

Contents have potential to engulf occupant

Schlumberger Private
Inward configuration could trap or asphyxiate occupant by:
1: Inwardly converging walls, or
2: Sloping floors converging to a small cross section

Any other recognized hazard

 Is not a simple process
 Needs careful control
 Normally requires the application of a number of
overlapping procedures

Confined - Responsibility
 All Confined Space Entry shall be subject to Specific Permits

 Air quality shall be verified before entry and air supply used if
necessary (SCBA)

Schlumberger Private
 Never enter a confined space without backup:
 they remain outside the confined space
 they have rescue equipment on hand

 Entry team must maintain contact with backup team (visual or

verbal)

Entry Procedures
 Prior to entry, hold safety meeting
 Review safety hazards
 Review PPE requirements

Schlumberger Private
 Review hazards in confined space
 Communications protocol
 Rescue procedure and equipment
 For sumps / sewers / top entry tanks, safety
harness and rescue line must be worn
 Work should be planned, with time limits on
each entry (whether with or without SCBA)

Entry Procedures
 A minimum of two people should remain outside the
space to act as backup/rescue
 Rescue team must be fully trained and have rescue

 Maintain constant communication with backup team
(visual, voice, 2-way radio)

 Chemical hazards: use of PPE
 Air quality testing

Schlumberger Private
 Use of SCBA and other PPE
 Use of rescue harness / winch
 Use of communications
 Permit to Work procedures
 Lockout / Tagout procedures
 Entry protocol
 Rescue protocol
 Site-specific training on each confined space
 Specific training on any tasks to be performed
Each new confined space or change of work will require retraining
