Large enough to permit entry (wholly or
partially ) and perform work

Storage tanks
Well Cellars
Diked areas (> 4 feet tall)
Silos (mud, chemicals, grain, etc.)
Process vessels
Separators
Transport tanks (trucks, railcars, marine)

Inward configuration could trap or asphyxiate occupant by:
1: Inwardly converging walls, or
2: Sloping floors converging to a small cross section

Air quality shall be verified before entry and air supply used if
necessary (SCBA)

Never enter a confined space without backup:
they remain outside the confined space
they have rescue equipment on hand

Communications protocol
Rescue procedure and equipment
For sumps / sewers / top entry tanks, safety
harness and rescue line must be worn
Work should be planned, with time limits on
each entry (whether with or without SCBA)

Maintain constant communication with backup team
(visual, voice, 2-way radio)

Emergency Planning
Prior to entry, advise others on site of rescue in
progress and need for backup rescue personnel.
Rescue team member who enters space should wear
SCBA, rescue harness and lifeline

Lifeline is attached to rescue winch
One member enters, second mans winch
Maintain communications at all times
If another rescue member should enter
must be similarly equipped and additional personnel remain
outside.
Never enter confined space without
• PPE and rescue equipment
• Back-up personnel outside
