What are Hazardous Materials?
• A substance or material that can pose an
unreasonable risk to health, safety, and the
environment, for example:

Schlumberger
– Chemicals.

Schlumberger Private
– Radioactive materials.
– Explosives.

Private
– Tobacco, drugs, alcoholic beverages, etc.
– Oxidizers
– Wastes.

Almost anything used inappropriately can become

hazardous!

What causes a Material to be Hazardous?

• Toxicity:
– How poisonous is a material.

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
• Exposure:
– How much of the material is in contact with the person.

Private
• Routes of entry:
– Injection (least common);
– Ingestion (easily avoidable);
– Skin absorption (frequent);
– Inhalation (most common).

What are PELs and TLVs?
• PEL = Permissible Exposure Limit (OSHA)
• TLV = Threshold Limit Value
• Refer to the concentration of substances at which levels workers
may be exposed without adverse health effects.

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
• These limits are usually defined by legislative bodies although
many countries adopt those used in the US – verify locally to
make sure of the actual limits to be used.

Private
• Time Weighted Average:
– Concentration for a normal 8 hour workday or 40 hour work week.
• Short Term Exposure Limit:
– Maximal concentration to which workers may be exposed for up
to 15 minutes.
• Ceiling Limit:
– Concentration that should not be exceeded even instantaneously.

Hazardous Material Classes
• Radioactive materials
• Flammables/explosives, e.g. alcohols, gasoline, propane
• Corrosives, e.g. hydrochloric acid, caustic soda
• Toxics, e.g. freon, nitrogen

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
• Reactives, e.g. peroxides, persulphates

Hazardous Material Communication

• Hazardous Material Communication helps Schlumberger

provide safer workplaces for our employees.
• Provides employees with information about the materials

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
being used.
• With this, they can take the necessary steps to reduce
exposure, substitute for less hazardous materials, and

Private
establish correct work practices.
• This, in turn, will help prevent the occurrence of work-
related illnesses and injuries caused by these materials.

Hazardous Material Communication

There are 5 parts to the HazCom Standard:

• A written program;
• Inventory and appropriate storage;

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
• Labeling;
• Material Safety Data Sheets;

Private
• Training.

Schlumberger’s HazCom Program

• The written program will clearly define:

– Responsibilities of all involved in management and handling of
hazardous materials;
– Labeling system requirements;

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
– Material Safety Data Sheet requirements;
– Training requirements;

Private
– Inventory requirements;
– Methods used to inform employees of hazards associated with
routine and non-routine tasks;
– Methods used to inform contract employees working in the
Schlumberger workplaces of hazardous materials to which they
may be exposed.

Schlumberger’s HazCom Program

• Inventory and appropriate storage:

– Current inventory lists should be maintained on site for all
hazardous materials;
– Hazardous materials should be appropriately stored to avoid losses

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
(containment, protected from unauthorized access, no leakage,
etc.).

Schlumberger’s HazCom Program
• Labeling:
– All Hazardous Materials must have clear labels in good condition on
each container with, at least: the manufacturer’s name and address;
identity of the material; and the appropriate warning labels /symbols.
– All repackaged materials must have clear labels in good condition on

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
each secondary/new container with, at least: the identity of the
material; the appropriate NFPA or HMIS warning labels /symbols.
– If the container’s label has been damaged, is unreadable or has been

Private
modified, the contents of the container cannot be used and may need
to be disposed.
• There are two main labeling systems for chemicals:
– HMIS (Hazardous Materials Identification System) – adopted by
Schlumberger. This system is used for labeling,packaging, and
shipping.
– NPFA 740 (National Fire Protection Association). This system is
used for rating the HM in its worst case scenario (fire-explosion-etc).

Schlumberger’s HazCom Program

• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS):

– Schlumberger will maintain MSDS for every Hazardous Material
stored and in use at every site;
– The MSDS should be made readily available for all employees;

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
– Each MSDS will contain the following information: the material
identification and manufacturer’s name and address;
composition/information on ingredients; hazards identification; first

Private
aid measures; fire fighting measures; accidental release measures;
handling and storage requirements; exposure control and personal
protection; physical and chemical properties; stability and reactivity;
toxicological information; ecological information disposal
considerations; transport information; regulatory information.

• Training:
– To understand the risks involved in Hazardous Material handling;
– To know the correct Personal Protective Equipment to be used for
the different types of materials;

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
– To be able to find, read and use the Material Safety Data Sheets;
– To put into practice the appropriate emergency response plans in

Hazardous Material Transportation
• Hazardous Materials can only be transported by personnel with the
appropriate training (HazMat Level 2).
• Packaging loaded with Hazardous Materials must have the correct label
or placards.

Schlumberger
Schlumberger Private
• Movement of Hazardous Materials outside of Schlumberger facilities
should be accompanied with the appropriate shipping papers that may
include: Shipping Name; Hazard Class or Division; UN/NA
Identification Number; Packing Group (PG l, ll, lll) total quantity of

Private
chemical; Emergency Response number; Shipper’s Certification and
signature/date.
• MSDS for all materials being transported must accompany the materials.
• Hazardous Materials must be protected at all times to avoid exposure to
the general public.
• No Hazardous Material containers should be leaking before loading for
shipment; if a leak develops during shipment, invoke the Emergency
Response Plan.

• Person(s) in charge of a location or facility and/or

operation is responsible for effective implementation of
the Hazard Communication Program as well as the
requirements defined in the Segment-specific Standards.

Schlumberger

• All persons handling, transporting and/or using Hazardous
Materials are responsible for compliance with the HazCom

Private
and Segment-specific requirements and conducting work
in a safe manner.
• Hazardous Materials can be and are used safely every day
with the appropriate precautions.

Ultimately YOU have the right and an obligation to stop work if it

seems unsafe!!
