Dehydration
What is Dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when you use or lose

more fluid than you take in, and your body
doesn't have enough water and other fluids
to carry out its normal functions. If you don't
replace lost fluids, you will get dehydrated.
Causes of Dehydration

Dehydration is caused by not drinking enough fluid

or by losing more fluid than you take in. Fluid is
lost through sweat, tears, vomiting, urine, or
diarrhea.

The severity of dehydration can depend on several

factors, such as climate, level of physical activity
and diet.
Illness

Dehydration is often the result of

an illness, such as gastroenteritis,
where fluid is lost through
persistent bouts of diarrhea and
vomiting.
Sweating

You can also become dehydrated

if you sweat excessively after a
fever, exercise, or carrying out
heavy, manual work in hot
conditions.
Alcohol

Dehydration can also occur

as a result of drinking too
much alcohol. Alcohol is a
diuretic, which means it makes
you pee more.
Diabetes

If you have diabetes, you're at risk of

becoming dehydrated because you have high
levels of glucose in your bloodstream. Your
kidneys will try to get rid of the glucose by
creating more urine, so your body becomes
dehydrated from going to the toilet more
frequently.
