English pronunciation of
Indian Word "pulu" means
'ball'.

Just as the ball game that is played
on horseback became known as
“polo,” the ball game played in the
water became known as “water
polo".

Water polo is a competitive
water sport that is played in a
swimming pool or other water
bodies.

It involves two teams, each
consisting of six field players
and a goalkeeper.
WHAT IS WATER POLO?
Water polo combines elements of
swimming, basketball, and soccer, and
requires players to have excellent
swimming skills, stamina, strength, and
agility.

The game is played with a small
ball, similar to a soccer ball, and
players use their hands to pass,
catch, and shoot the ball.

globally and is particularly well-
known in Europe, where it has a
strong following.
HISTORY OFWATER POLO
• 1869: Original water polo balls were made from a pig’s
stomach and were replaced with Indian rubber balls by this
year.
• 1870: In the mid of this year, the construction of baths
allowed English "to get washed" and "to learn swimming"
called "football in the water". Also, the London Swimming
Club formulated rules for the sport and hosted the first official
game at the Crystal Palace Plunge in London.

• 1877: William Wilson, a Scottish Swimming Coach,
drew up a set of rules for "Aquatic Football".
• 1880: Rules were introduced in Scotland to shift
the game's focus to skill over force.
• 1886: The first national championships were held
in Scotland.

• 1888: In this year, the first national
championships held in England.
• 1890: The first water-polo match took
place between two National Teams: the
Scottish and English team in Kensington.

• Between 1890 & 1900: Water polo game spread rapidly
throughout Europe like Germany, Austria, France,
Belgium, Hungary, and Italy.
• 1900: Men's water polo made its first appearance at the
Olympic Games in Paris.
• 1911: The Federation International De Natation Amateur
(FINA), adopted the Scottish rules for all international
water polo events.

• 1920: 12 countries competed in water polo in Antwerp
Olympic Games.
• 1928-1980: Hungary were widely recognized as the
world's best water polo nation.
• 1979: The first Water Polo World Cup for women was
held by FINA.
• 2000: Women's water polo was the last Olympic team
sport to be added in this year.

BALL
The ball is made up of
waterproof material. Its
cover is so designed and
textured that it gives
additional grip to the
player.

Cap
A cap is used for the
protection purpose.
Colored headgear with
individual numbers and ear
protectors. The aim is to
protect ear and head. It is
also used to differentiate
the teams.

Goalpost
Goalposts are placed on
both sides of the pool.
They are made to float on
water using floaters. They
are usually made up of
glass reinforced polyester
resin.

Mouth Guard
This is the most important
instrument for the players.
While diving under water,
sometimes players face
heavy impact. This will
ensure player’s protection
from that.

Swimsuit
Swim briefs or jammers
(tight length trunks) are the
swimsuit costume for male
players. Female players
wear one-piece swimsuit.
