TEACHER’S QUESTIONING STRATEGIES IN

CLASSROOM INTERACTION

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

The interaction between teachers and learners is one of the most important activity in the
classroom. According to Gattis (2002) states that a question is one of the most important
tools in guiding and extending students’ learning whether helping learners to acquire basic
skill or a better understanding to solve problems, or engage in high-order thinking such as
evaluation, questions are crucial .
FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM

Based on the background of the study above the researcher formulates the problem as
follows:
1. What kinds of questioning strategies are used by the English teacher during the
classroom interaction at MAS Proyek Univa Medan?
2. Why do the English teachers use those strategies during the classroom interaction ?
OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH

The research formulates the problem of the research as follows:


1. To elaborate the kinds of questioning strategies that the English teacher used during
the classroom interaction at MAS Proyek Univa Medan
2. To elaborate the English teachers use those strategies during the classroom
interactoion
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
QUESTIONING STRATEGY

Questioning is a separate skill in teaching to get answers from other people. Almost the entire process of
evaluation, measurement, assessment and testing is done with questions. In essence learning is asking and
answering questions. Asking can be seen as a reflection of each individual curiousity. While answering
questions shows a person’s ability to think.
Guest (1985) stated that questioning strategy is one of important tools to extending students’ learning
which can help teachers develop their own strategies to enhance the students work and thinking
THE IMPORTANT OF ASKING QUESTION TO STUDENTS

According to McMilan, in a productive learning, asking questions will be very useful for:
Engaging students in lesson
Encourage students’ understanding and thinking
Review the contents of important lessons
To control students
Assess student progress

QUESTION PLANNING STRATEGY

Question planning strategy refers to types of questions used by the teachers in the classroom. The
functions are to elicit response and identify problems, better understand students’ knowledge, and invite
for further discussions.

Question planning strategy consist of asking question relevant to students, asking open-ended questions,
and follow-up question.
QUESTION CONTROLLING STRATEGY

Question planning strategy refers to ways or procedures used by teachers to ask question in the classroom.
The function to distribute turn-taking and encourage participation.

Question planning strategy consist of phrase the question and then call on the student, call on specific
students to answer question, dominates in class by asking or answering all the questions give the students
enough time to think about before answering the question.
RESEARCH METHOD

Þ This research used qualitative research in this study. The research conduct by the researcher at
MAS Proyek Univa Medan. Therefore this research conduct with observation and interview
the participant, namely the English teachers of MAS Proyek Univa Medan.
Þ There are only one English teachers at MAS Proyek Univa Medan and the teacher handled all
of the classes so that the researcher want to analyze the the teacher strategies when use
questioning strategies in classroom interaction
CONCLUSION

The English teaches actively using questioning strategies in the classroom interaction that they
were asked the question to check about the students understanding about the previous material, to
attract the students’ attention, to support the students contribution in the class and also to
motivate the students to learn
