Organization

A paragraph is not a collection of random

sentences. Effective paragraphs are organized
to move the reader through ideas in a logical
way.
There are three prevailing paragraph patterns in
writing:

a. Chronological
b. Spatial/ Geographical
c. Topical/ Logical
14
Chronological
“ events and/or
usually used to narrate
explain a process or procedure

uses signal words that show time or order

15
Spatial/ Geographical
helpful in descriptive“paragraphs since it
explains the positioning of things in a space

uses signal words that show directions

16
Topical/ Logical

arranges ideas by providing various sub-
topics within a broad topic

17
Examine the paragraphs.
What organizational pattern is
used?
Attached to my back-bedroom wall is a small wooden rack
dangling with red and turquoise necklaces that shimmer as I
enter. Just to the right of the rack, billowy white curtains
frame a large window with a sill that ends just six inches from
the floor. The peace of such an image is a stark contrast to my
desk, sitting to the right of the window, layered in textbooks,
crumpled papers, coffee cups, and an overflowing ashtray.

Spatial/ Geographical
Many of the racial and ethnic groups that live in the Hawaiian
Islands today arrived at different
times in history. Most of them came to work as laborers on the
sugar and pineapple plantations. The first group arrived in the
1850’s, when the Chinese came. They were followed by the
Japanese in the 1880’s, and then the Koreans and Filipinos in
the early 1900’s. These groups were the last major Asian
immigrants to the islands.

Chronological
One of the most common yet most puzzling phobias is
claustrophobia, the fear of
small, enclosed places. It's only natural, of course, not
to enjoy being locked in a closet, but for some people,
the thought of standing in a small elevator, descending
into the ocean inside a submarine, or riding on an
enclosed airplane for a few hours can produce great
anxiety.

crashes.”
Coherent and cohesive
“My favorite color is blue. I like it because it is
calming, and it relaxes me. I often go outside in
the summer and lie on the grass and look into
the clear sky when I’m stressed. For this reason,
I’d have to say my favorite color is blue.”
