Subtracting Fractions & Mixed
Numbers
To subtract similar fractions:
• Subtract the numerators but
retain the same denominator.
• Remember to express the
difference in lowest term or in a
simplest form.
To subtract mixed fractions with the
same denominators:
• Subtract the whole number.
• Subtract the fraction
• Write the mixed number with
whole and the fraction in simplest
form.
To subtract mixed fractions with dissimilar
denominators:
• Find the least common denominator
(LCD) of the two denominators.
• Subtract the fractions following the rules
in subtracting similar fractions
• Change the fraction into lowest term if
possible
In Mathematics, the LCM of
any two is the value that is
evenly divisible by the two
given numbers.
To subtract mixed fractions with dissimilar
denominators:

• Express them as similar fractions by finding

their LCD
• Subtract the fractions following the rules in
subtracting similar fractions
• Bring down the whole number
• Change the fraction into lowest term if
possible.
