The 4C’s Of Leadership
(a value system)
Character (consistency): People who are not consistent are displaying
character flaws, they often lack competence and commitment also.
Competence (commitment): People who lack commitment are displaying a
lack of competence, character and consistency and are often not trusted by
others.
Courage (confidence): People who are not confident often lack courage, does
not use candor and lack connection with others.
Candor (connection): People who have a problem with connecting with others
usually lack candor, courage and confident which make it hard for others to
follow them as a leader.
4C’s Character (Consistency)
• Perhaps one of the greatest of the all the attributes
of leadership
• Measures the moral qualities of a leader
• These values are the medium thru which all
decisions flow
• Character enhances “Trust” throughout the
organization

• Must display caring (genuine concern for
followers)
• Must possess optimism – great outlook
• Must display self-control (especially in time of
trouble)
• Must understand what is effective communication

• Consistency speaks of dependability of the leader
• Consistency allows for long term success

• Competence in a Leader links directly to Respect
• Competence is the way to leadership growth
• Competence is not stationary – it moves with the
leaders
• Competence must be sought after

• Commitment is required to make anyone


successful
• Commitment is display from one’s competence
level
• Subordinates will follow when a leader display
commitment to the organization
• Comment often does not come easy – work at it
4C’s Courage (Confidence)
• Courage speaks of doing the right thing regardless
to the outcome
• Courage might also mean losing a position or title
• Displaying courage enacts selfless behavior
• Courage means to take responsibility for one’s
actions as well as their behavior

• Confidence can sometimes be viewed as cockiness
• Confidence exhibits signs of being happy
• Often confidence is connected to a can do attitude
• Confidence is displayed in an upbeat leader which holds
a positive vision
• Confidence has been called the leader’s best friend
• Followers want a leader who is confident in what they
say, believe and especially what they do

• Candor speaks of being candid
• Candor is similar to courage but is often related to
speech
• A Leader is only as good as the words they keep
• Candor may be use in a tactful way in order to be
effective
• Candor is based with the truth as its core

• Leader who lack candor will often lack connection
with their followers
• All followers want to be lead by someone they
connect to and with
• A leader lacking connection will be also lacking in
their ability to lead
• Connect is an attribute with promise – it speaks of
investing the people of the organization

Communication is simply the
act of transferring information
from one place, person or group
to another.

** Communis and communicare' are two Latin words related to the word
communication. Communis is noun word, which means common,
communiality or sharing. Similarly, communicare is a verb, which means
'make something common.
