RESPIRATORY
STRUCTURE OF INSECT
AND ITS ADAPTATIONS
The respiratory system in insects is the tracheal system which
consists of spiracles, trachea and tracheoles.

1. Spiracles
a. Spiracles are small pores through which air enters
and leaves through the tracheal system
b. There are 10 pairs of spiracles on the thorax and
an abdomen of an insect.
c. Each spiracle has valves which control the opening
and the closing of the spiracle.
2. Trachea
a. Trachea in insect is a network of air tubes
which open to the outside through spiracles.
b. Supported by the rings of chitin to prevent it
from collapsing
c. From the spiracle, the trachea branches until
it finally branches into fine tubes called
tracheoles

DURING INHALATION

abdominal muscles of grasshopper relax

and the spiracle valves open
abdominal volume increases
air pressure in the trachea decreases
air enters the trachea through the spiracle
DURING EXHALATION

abdominal muscles contract

abdominal volume
decreases
air pressure in the trachea increases
air is forced out through the
spiracles
