HAVE YOU
NOTICED?
Questions Leading to the Lesson
1. What have you noticed about
the operation being used for these
equations?

2. Have you noticed that it looks

like similar with the symbol used
for multiplication of functions?

3. Have you noticed or

encountered a topic about
“COMPOSITION OF
FUNCTIONS?” If YES, what is it
all about?
This is how composition of functions work,
illustrated by a function machine.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. perform/solve composition of functions.

2. solve problems involving composition

(and all fundamental operations) of
functions.
COMPOSITION OF
FUNCTIONS
-is a function substituted to all to
create another function.

-can be called as “function of functions”

COMPOSITION OF
FUNCTIONS
COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS -
EXAMPLE
Composition of function is putting a function inside
another function.
COMPOSITION OF FUNCTIONS -
EXAMPLE

To evaluate composition of function, always

start with the inside function
(from right to left).

In this case, we first evaluated ℎ(4) and then

substituted the resulted value to 𝑓(𝑥).

A mapping diagram can also help you to visualize the
concept of evaluating a function composition.

A table of values is another way to represent a function.

a Problem

1. EXPLORE (Read, analyze, identify the given)

2. PLAN (Write the equation/function)
3. SOLVE (Solve the equation/function)
4. CHECK (if the answer is really correct)
PROBLEM SOLVING ABOUT
FUNCTIONS
Miguel is a student who commutes from home to school which is 15 km
apart. There are two modes of transportation the first one is through jeep
and the other one is through tricycle. In riding a jeepney the fare charge
₱9.00 for the first 4 kms travel and ₱0.75 for each additional kilometer.
Meanwhile in riding a tricycle, the fare would be ₱10.00 for the first 5 kms
travel and ₱1 for each additional kilometer.

If you are Miguel which between the two modes of transportation will
you choose? Justify your answer.
PROBLEM SOLVING ABOUT
FUNCTIONS
1. EXPLORE (Read, analyze, identify the given)
Let x = number of kilometers
Let C(x) = cost of the fare
2. PLAN (Write the equation/function)
Make a piecewise function for jeepney and tricycle.

C ( x )=
{ 9.00 , 𝑖𝑓 0< 𝑥 ≤ 4
9.00+ 0.75 ( 𝑥 − 4 ) , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 4
𝐶 ( 𝑥) =
{ 10 .00 ,𝑖𝑓 0< 𝑥 ≤ 5
10.00 +1 ( 𝑥 −5 ) , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 >5

Jeepney is cheaper
compared to having
a tricycle ride

COST: 9 + 0.75(15-4) = 17.25
