Grammar – Quantifiers
Quantifiers are words that tell us the number of something.

Countable Nouns Uncountable Nouns

Question How many? How much?

Large number A lot of, lots of, too many A lot of, lots of, too much

Small number Not many, A few Not much, A little

Zero No, not any No, not any

Questions
We use the question
«How Many?» to ask about countable nouns, and the question
«How much?» to ask about uncountable nouns.

How many trees are there? How much sugar is there?

Large Numbers
There are too many people. There is too much sugar in my tea.
We do not use ‘many’ or ‘much’ in positive sentences. We use
‘lots of’ or ‘a lot of’.
There are many people in my city. There are a lot of people in
my city.

There is much sugar in my tea. There is a lot of sugar in my

tea.
Small Numbers
We can use ‘not many’ with countable nouns to say there is a small
number of something. We can use ‘a few’ to say that there are 2-3 of
something. We use ‘not much’ or ‘a little’ with uncountable nouns to say
there is a small amount of something.

There aren’t many trees in the park. There are a few restaurants in my
city.
There isn’t much sugar in the cake. There is a little milk in my tea.
ZERO

We use ‘not any’ or ‘no’ to say there is zero of something with

both countable and uncountable nouns. Notice the difference
is sentence construction.

There isn’t any sugar in my tea. There is no sugar in my tea.

Choose correct quantifier. Think about if the noun countable or uncountable
