The French Revolution
• The French Revolution was a period of radical
political and societal change in France
• It began in with the Estate General of 1789
• Its causes are generally agreed to be a
combination of social, political and economic
factors, which the existing regime proved
unable to manage
• The ruler of France at that time was King

The Reign Of Terror
• The death of king louis XVI sparked the Reign of Terror, an attempt
to eradicate all "counter-revolutionaries“. It began on September 5 th
1793
• Many who were suspected of being enemies of the revolution were
killed in public executions during this period
• French lawyer and statesman Maximilien Robespierre led the Terror,
which was caused in part by a rivalry between France's two leading
political parties: the Jacobins and the Girondins.
• Due to its excessive actions, the public support of the committee of
Public Safety decreased
• Robespierre and his supporters were captured and executed, ending
the Reign of Terror in 1794.
Napoleon
Bonaparte
• Napoleon Bonaparte was a dictator of
France from 1804-1814. He was also a
military and political leader
• He was born on the island of Corsica in the
year 1769
• He rose to prominence during the French
Revolution and led several successful
campaigns during the Revolutionary Wars.
• He was first given a promotion of First
Consul in 1799, and then he became the
Emperor of France in the year 1804
Changes Brought By Napoleon
• Napoleon improved France in every manner, and those changes are still
helpful to this day.
• He established the Napoleonic code, which secured the right to property
and established equality before the law and removed all privileges based on
birth.
• He introduced the voting system of Plebiscite or vote casted by men of age
21 and above
• In territories under French control such as Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and
Dutch Republic, peasants were freed from their owners and the feudal
system was abolished.
• There were improvements in communication and transport systems.
• New businessmen, artisans, peasants and workers enjoyed a new-found
freedom.
The Fall Of Napoleon
• In January 1814 France was being attacked on all its
frontiers
• Paris was captured on March 30th 1814 and Napoleon had
been defeated
• He was abdicated and exiled to the island of Elba, and he
also became the Emperor of the small island
• In 1815, he escaped the exile and went back to France to re-
take his country, but faced a crushing defeat at the battle of
Waterloo, which resulted in him getting sent off to a lonely
island off the shore of Africa
• He lived there until his death in the year 1821
