Once a rock has been broken down, a process called erosion transports the bits of rock and

Water, acids, salt, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents of weathering
and erosion. Weathering

• Minerals crystallize from a melt at different temperatures
during the migration and emplacement of the magma.
• Those minerals that crystallize at higher temperatures will be
the least stable at the surface.
• From this it is obvious that quartz will be the most stable
mineral in the weathering environment, and will be a
dominant constituent of sediments and sedimentary rocks.
