● There is a growing trend to employ new approaches in drilling practice to
reduce operational costs in oil well by using previous experiences gained
from either previously drilled wells or on wells being currently drilled.

Key technologies of
intelligent drilling and
completion
• Intelligent D&C technologies include well trajectories, steering, ROP optimization, and more.
Based on multi-source geological engineering data, intelligent well trajectories use AI methods
like genetic algorithms and neural networks to optimize hole azimuth and other parameters.
• Using AI algorithms, real-time trajectory monitoring & analysis, seismic-while-drilling, near-bit
measurement, and other innovative technologies, intelligent guiding technology predicts and
controls drilling operations.
• ROP intelligent optimization often employs large data and an intelligent optimization algorithm
to optimize many parameters globally to match the formation, bit, and parameters and achieve
dynamically optimal design of parameters like hole inclination and azimuth.
• It optimizes the ROP by automatically issuing control instructions via linkage with the rig.

Intelligent drilling &
completion equipment
● Surface equipment technologies including rig floor robots, automatic tripping control,
automatic bit-feeding, automatic pressure management, on-line drilling fluid monitoring,
etc. are widely used by international oil corporations.
● Intelligent drill bits and pipe provide unattended operation and precise control,
improving drilling efficiency, danger, and labor cost.
● The widespread commercialization of the rotary steering system allows drilling
measurement and control, ensuring intelligent steering and effective rock breaking.
● The parameter-optimization model, which uses maximum oil/gas productivity as the
objective function, is established using neural network and other methods based on
geological conditions and reservoir characteristics.
● The best parameters calculated are compared with real-time drilling data to automatically
find the best trajectory.
Chinese drilling rigs manage tubular strings
automatically. However, sensors' reliability and
usefulness in sensing some conditions and equipment's
online warning and diagnosis accuracy need
improvement. Hydraulic driving equipment lacks
intelligence and accuracy. Industrial control software
can't sense hole conditions or recognize formation, but
pressure management drilling equipment is mostly
automated. MWD and other downhole tools are mostly
domestically produced, but their comprehensive sensing
ability, precise geo-steering, fine geological evaluation,
intelligent navigation speed-up, and other functions
need improvement.

Intelligent drilling &
completion software
Commercialized and upgraded digital twin, autonomous control, drilling emulation, and remote
decision-making software. Machine learning, big data, cloud computing, and other cutting-edge
technology have helped overseas corporations predict borehole conditions and characterize formation
mechanical features. They developed a platform for integrating and analyzing D&C big data, a cloud-
based well construction engineering design and intelligent optimization system, and integrated
fracturing optimization software, which greatly improved D&C design, downhole complex forecasts,
analysis and control precision, etc.

Halliburton Well Construction Project 4.0 uses big data analysis and a drilling intelligent optimization platform to develop Digital Twin
Wellbore, which can do pre-drilling simulation rehearsal, real-time drilling decision-making, & post-drilling replay analysis.
● Schlumberger's DELFI platform's DrillPlan module can reduce drilling design and planning time from
weeks to days.
● ConocoPhillips D&C big data analysis platform (IDW) simplifies data collection, processing, and
analysis to minimize rig time, enhance completion design, and improve formation understanding.
China's intelligent D&C software R&D is in its infancy, with basic functions of D&C design,
monitoring, and optimization, but data norms are not unified, information sharing is not smooth, the
fusion degree of the physical model and machine learning algorithm is low, and accuracy,
comprehensiveness, and field applicability need to be improved.

Schlumberger's new onshore "Drilling System of the
Future" organically integrates digital technology,
equipment, tools, and software into a single system
with an automatic drill pipe handling device and
1000+ built-in sensors to monitor more than 350
drilling activities and continuously increases
automation and intelligence.

National Oilwell's integrated control platform (eVolve)


incorporates NOVOS, Intelliserv, BlackSteam, and DrillShark. It
processes and analyses downhole dynamic data and surface data,
interacts with the comprehensive drilling simulation model, and
uses NOVOS for closed-loop drilling operation control. It cut
drilling time by 37% in 6 horizontal Eagle Ford shale wells. Its
high cost and system reliability need improvement.
Precision Drilling With Machine Learning
Algorithms-Shell
Shell is employing reinforcement learning to operate
its drilling equipment this time, basically rewarding
the AI's choices. To drive the drill into the
subsurface, a machine learning model is trained on
Shell's comprehensive drilling records and
simulations. Seismic surveys, temperature, pressure,
and drill bit data are also considered. Then the
geosteerer or driller can use reward or punishment
functions to help the machinery adapt to changing
subsurface conditions.
This helps geosteerers understand their environment, resulting in faster, more precise outcomes and less
machinery damage. Shell seeks big ideas to push the oil and gas industry's limits. The Shell Game Changer
program solicits machine learning AI proposals from people and startups worldwide.

equipment, tools, & materials.
● D&C tech integrates automation with intelligence, focusing on the latter.
● Intelligent D&C links software, surface equipment, and downhole tools into
a closed-loop system with decision-making tech.
● Downhole tools include drill bits, pipes, and steering systems; surface
equipment includes robots with control systems, tripping, and bit-feeding
mechanisms; intelligent software integrates all for efficient drilling.
