9.2 Acid-alkali indicators and pH scale

Who invented the pH scale?

Soren Sorensen (1868–1939),
a Danish chemist, invented the
pH scale in 1909. He realized that
all acids contain hydrogen. Then,
he introduced the concept ‘pH’.
‘pH’ is the short form of Latin
words ‘pondus hydrogenii ’,
meaning ‘power of hydrogen’.
