Sulawesi Earthquake

What is Sulawesi?
Sulawesi or Celebes – Indonesian island located
east of Borneo. It is famous for coral reefs and
diving sites such as Bunaken National Park, Taguan
Islands and Wakatobi National Park.

The population of the island is


about 16 475 000 people
Earthquake activity
As you know, Indonesia is a country
with a high probability of occurrence of
a tsunami or earthquake. So there was
more than one case.

In 2018, there was also serious earthquake,


that triggered tsunami, with waves reaching
a maximum height of three meters and
destroyed a huge part of the city.
Disaster in 2021
On 15 January 2021, a 6.2
magnitude earthquake hit Majene
( West Sulawesi Province ). The
epicenter of the quake, which
struck at 1:28 a.m. Jakarta time,
was 6 kilometers, at a depth of 10
kilometers . Thousands of residents
fled their homes to seek safety
following the quake, which could be
felt strongly for five to seven
seconds and damaged at least 300
houses in Majene.
Twelve hours prior to the
mainshock, a 5.7 foreshock
struck the area and caused
multiple landslides and
building damage in Majene.

The 6.2 mainshock was followed by a small number


of lower intensity aftershocks—by January 17, only
32 aftershocks had been recorded.
Aftermath of the earthquake
In Majene, at least 932 were injured
and 95,000 residents have been
displaced, according to the country's
National Board for Disaster
Management.

The quake severely damaged buildings and


houses, including a hospital that was
completely flattened, trapping dozens of
patients and staff in the rubble.
Preliminary assessments indicate that 59
schools have been damaged.
