Present continuous with future meaning
PRESENT CONTINOUS

We often use the Present Continuous to talk about future arrangements.

A future arrangement is a plan that we have decided and organised with
another person, a group of people or a company:

I am leaving tomorrow at 8 p.m. (I’ve already bought my train ticket.)

We’re staying with friends when we get to Boston in June. ( It’s already coordinated.)
We’re meeting Helen at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.(It’s in your official agenda.)

I am going to leave tomorrow. (I haven’t bought the train ticket yet.)

We’re going to stay with friends when we get to Boston. ( I haven’t asked them yet.)
We’re going to meet Helen tomorrow .(The meeting hasn’t been coordinated yet.)
Present continuous: Affirmative - Negative

To Be Verb in
Subject + +
Verb “ing” Form
She is flying to London tomorrow at four.
She isn’t flying to London tomorrow at five.

Use present continuous for plans in the future when

we already know the time and place or other details.
IMPORTANT!
When we use the Present Continuous with future meaning, it is necessary to add a time
reference (tomorrow, tomorrow evening, on/next Sunday) so we know it refers to the
future and not to the present:

Jane is working at the moment , but in the evening she is playing tennis.

Present Continuous refers to Present Continuous refers to planned

present activity activity in future

Have you already planned or fixed something for this weekend or next week?
I am going to the dentist on Monday at 8 a.m.
I am watching a movie with my husband on Sunday at 6 p.m.
