EVS EXERCISE

WEEK 1
VURA SAI NIKHIL

AIM: TO DESCRIBE THE
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
OF YOUR LOCALITY AND
SUGGEST A REMEDY.
INTRODUCTION:

Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These

harmful materials are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural, such as
volcanic ash. They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or
runoff produced by factories, and radioactive elements. Pollutants damage the
quality of air, water, and land.
Visakhapatnam
City of destiny.
Visakhapatnam:
Visakhapatnam(Vizag), popularly known as the “City of
Destiny” is one of the top cleanest and pollution-free cities in India.
The port of Visakhapatnam is renowned for being home to the
oldest shipyard in all of India, and with a plethora of manmade
wonders and natural spectacles. It also has its bad sides but, those
are overshadowed by good things in the city. The problems
identified in our city are mentioned in the next slide.
AIR POLLUTION:

• Air pollution is one of the most increasing

problems in this world. In Vizag, Air pollution
used to be very less. But setting up factories
caused an increase in the high amount of air
pollution.
• There are many types of air pollutants such as
gases including Ammonia, Carbon monoxide,
sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides, etc.
Solutions for Preventing Air Pollution:

• The most basic solution for air pollution is to move away from fossil fuels, replacing them
with alternative energies like solar, wind, and geothermal.
• Shifting to electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles, and promoting shared mobility (i.e
carpooling, and public transport) could reduce air pollution.
• Monitor air quality warnings, and take action on poor air quality days. On days when
pollution levels are high, taking action can help reduce the risk of harm to those who are
most vulnerable.
• Producing clean energy is crucial. But equally important is to reduce our consumption of
energy by adopting responsible habits and using more efficient devices.
Noise Pollution:
• Air Pollution is generally defined as regular exposure
to elevated sound levels that may lead to adverse
effects on humans or other living organisms.
• Causes of Noise pollution include Traffic,
Firecrackers, high-volume sound systems,
Construction sites, etc.
• In Vizag, there was no problem with Noise pollution,
but due to the development of the city, many people
started coming to the city for work, which ultimately
caused the increase in vehicles and traffic.
• Rrecords suggest that last year, the annual average
noise level recorded at Jagadamba junction was 84,
while the same for Maddilapalem and RTC Complex
junctions were 83.7 and 85.1 respectively, which is 20
decibels beyond the permissible limit.
Solution for Preventing Noise Pollution:

• We should stop using Firecrackers which make a lot of sound causing stress to animals and
people who are sensitive to sound.
• Unnecessary honking of car or bike horns while traveling should be reduced.
• We should stop using high-volume speakers in marriages, parties, and family functions to
reduce noise pollution.
• The government should implement strict rules and impose fines on people who cause
unnecessary sounds.
• Everybody should equally contribute in preventing the noise pollution.
Water pollution:
• Because of the increased number of factories near ports are
causing pollution by throwing waste in the water, causing the
death of marine animals.
• Visakhapatnam Harbor, a semi-enclosed water body on the east
coast of India, is subject to a high degree of pollution caused by
industrial and urban wastes.
• Studies carried out during the last twenty years or so at 6 selected
stations in the harbor revealed appreciable hydrographic and
biotic changes.
• Over the years, the concentration of nitrites (max. 5 mg/l) and
phosphates (9.6 mg/l) has increased. Dissolved oxygen registered
all-time-high values (max. 21.6 mg/l) caused by periodic outbursts
of phytoplankton and other species .
Solutions for Preventing Water Pollution:

• 80% of plastic in our oceans is from land sources. In order to reduce the amount of plastic
entering our ocean, we need to both reduce our use of plastic globally and improve plastic
waste management.
• Using Natural pesticides and compost instead of Artificial and chemical pesticides which
contaminate both ground and seawater.
• Preventing factories from throwing waste and garbage into the sea which is the major
reason for water pollution and the government should involve in it.
• Preventing people from throwing litter in the water or drains, instead of throwing in
dustbins and recycling them reduces the pollution.
