First Aider
Someone who has completed a course of theoretical and practical
instruction and passed a professionally supervised examination.
Responsibilities
• Assess the situation quickly and safely.
• Make the area safe.
• Identify ASAP, the injury or the nature of the illness affecting a casualty.
• Give early, appropriate and adequate treatment in a sensible order of priority.
• Arrange of transport of the casualty.
• Accompany the casualty.
• Make and pass on a report and give further help if required.

Bandaging and Dressing of
Wounds
Uses of
• To control bleeding

Dressings • To protect the wound

• To prevent infection
General rules for Applying Dressings
• Dressing pad should always extend well beyond a wound’s edges
• Place dressings directly on a wound
• Do not slide them on from the side, and replace any that slip from place
• If bleeding strikes through a dressing, do not remove it, instead apply another dressing over the top
• If there is only one sterile dressing, use this to cover the wound and use other clean materials as top-
dressings
• Wash hands thoroughly before dressing a wound
• Wear disposable gloves if possible
• Avoid touching the wound or any part of the dressing that will come in contact with the wound
• Avoid talking, sneezing or coughing over the wound
• To maintain direct pressure over a
dressing
