ONGC at a Glance
• Vision: To be global leader in integrated energy business through sustainable growth,
knowledgeexcellence and exemplary governance practices.
• ONGC is the flagship company of India; and making this possible is a dedicated team of
nearly 40,000 professionals who toil round the clock.
• They include geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, drilling engineers, reservoir engineers,
petroleum engineers, production engineers, engineering & technical service providers,
financial and human resource experts, IT professionals and so on.
• The liberalized economic policy, adopted by the Government of India in July 1991,sought to
deregulate and de-license the core sectors (including petroleum sector) with partial
disinvestments of government equity in Public Sector Undertakings and other measures. As
a consequence, thereof, ONGC was re-organized as a limited Company under the
Company's Act, 1956 in February 1994.
InfoCom sector at ONGC
• The INFOCOM section at ONGC deals with all the telecommunication systems. Infocom
Services is all about wireless/wired communication, data storage, work automation, taking care
of IT infrastructure etc.
• The main objective of Information Consolidation for Efficiency is to optimize and standardize the
business processes for integrated information availability.
• The major Information systems under the Infocom Services at ONGC are as follows -
1. SCADA
2. SAMPARC
3. SAP
Apart from these systems, I’ll also be giving a introabout the Networking details at ONGC which are
as follows.
1. LAN & WAN
2. Wired / Wireless Communication
3. Satellite Communication (VSAT)
Computer Network
• NETWORK TYPES:
1.L.A.N: -Local Area Network: are privately-owned
networks within a single building orcampus of up to
a few kilometres in size. LANs can be small, linking
as few as three computers but often link hundreds if
computers used by thousands of people. The
development of standard networking protocols and
media has resulted in worldwideproliferation of LANs
throughout business and educational organizations
2. W.A.N.: -Wide Area Network: a network that
covers a larger area such as a company. This is
accomplished by connecting the different LANs
using services such as dedicatedleased phone lines,
dial-up phone lines (both synchronous and
asynchronous), satellitelinks, and data packet carrier
services
Supervisory control and data acquistion
(SCADA)
• SCADA, i.e. Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition, is another vital component of
ONGC's IT strategy.
• It is a complete solution (comprises of
Software and Hardware) for ONGC’s
Production and Drilling management. From
measuring amount of oil produced in every
hour or each year to amount of oil being
wasted. It is a software solution
accompanied by certain measuring
equipment/instruments which keeps a 24-
hour check on oil production, oil – water
separation, oil – gas separation etc.
• SCADA is divided into 3 tiers:
Tier 1 (Data of each oil field, for e.g.
Mehsana, Ankeleshwar etc.)
Tier 2 (Data of certain group of oil
fields. For e.g. Ahmedabad Asset)
Tier 3 (Collective data of all the Assets
i.e. Corporate Database @ Delhi)
• SCADA project covers 157 offshore
platforms and 247 onshore
installations, pipelines and 2
processing plants with a cost of
approximately 100 Million dollars

Learning Outcome
• The training at ONGC has helped me gain knowledge about the various information systems
at ONGC.
• It also helped me learn about different technologies used in the operations of ONGC.
• I got some hands on experience on how the communication set up is established with
different equipments, the ways of propagation and finally connecting theend user.
• I also gained some basic knowledge in the field of computer networking and the whole
network spread out.
• I have learnt about the working of different communication systems used in ONGC which
are mentioned inmy report.
• I got the idea on how the actual communication is taking place using different types of
devices.
