TABLE OF
VALUES
x 0 1 2 3 x 0 1 2 3
y 3 5 7 9 f(x) 0 3 10 21

A table of values can be generated from a

quadratic function by substituting the x-
values and calculating for f(x)/y.

Second Difference Test

In a quadratic function, equal differences
in the independent variable x produce equal
second differences in the dependent variable.
1 x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
y 18 11 6 3 2 3 6

First Difference
in y
11−18=−7 6−11=−5 3−6=−3 2−3=−1 3−2=1 6−3=3
Second
Difference in y
−5− ( −7 )=2 −3− ( −5 )=2 −1− ( −3) =2 1− ( −1 ) =2 3−1=2
The second differences are equal. Hence, this table
represents a quadratic function.
2 x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
y 9 3 1 3 9 19 33

First Difference
in y
3−9=−6 1−2=−2 3−1=2 9−3=6 19−9=10 33−19=14
Second
Difference in y
−2− (− 6 )= 4 2− ( −2 )= 4 10−6=4 14−10=4
The second differences are equal. Hence, this table
represents a quadratic function.
3 x -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
y -3 -1 1 3 5 7 9

First Difference

−1− ( −3 ) =2 1− ( −1 ) =2 3−1=2 5−3=2 7−5=2 9−7=2

in y

Notice that we obtain a common or equal difference in the first

difference.

Therefore, this table DOES NOT represents a quadratic function.
