MEANING OF YOGA

 The word YOGA is taken from Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’. It means to ‘unite or
to bind’. It is called the combination of body and mind.
Yoga is the assimilation of qualities, power or energies of man.
 Yoga is a method through which Man’s power are developed.
 The main aim is to keep the body flexible, healthy, energetic and more fit
for the body’s day to day requirements.
 This is a befitting means of fulfilling the physical and spiritual need.
Asana (body posture)

Asana is the Sanskrit word for ‘Posture’.


Features of yoga
 Increases flexibility.
 Increases muscle tone and muscle strength.
 Helps in weight loss and also balancing of weight.
 Provides protection from injury.
 Helps in maintaining a balanced metabolism.
 Improves respiration, energy and vitality.
 Removes lethargy.
 Keeps us healthy and fit.
 Increases our concentration and focus.
 Removes toxins from our body.
Importance of yoga
Yoga plays a vital role in shaping our body and is very important for maintaining
balance between mind and body. This includes:

Attainment of perfect equilibrium and harmony.


 Promotes self – healing.
 Enhances personal power.
 Helps in attention, focus and concentration especially important for children.
 Keeps the mind, soul and body alert and active.
 Helps in improving memory.
Limitations of yoga
Yoga is usually very beneficial with least or no side effects but still like
everything else, it has some limitations. These include the following:

 Overdoing yoga poses.


 Untrained yoga instructors.
 Not a miracle cure for all problems.
 Risk of injuries.
 Other physical dangers of yoga
 May induce blood pressure sometimes.
Role of yoga
• Improves your flexibility.
• Builds muscle strength.
• Perfects your posture.
• Prevents joint breakdown.
• Protects your spine.
• Better your bone health.
• Increases your blood flow.
• Makes you happy.
Some asanas of yoga

PADAMASA MAYURASA

SHIRSHASA
padmasana
BENEFITS:
• Calms the brain.
• Helps develop good posture.
• Stretches the ankles and knees.

LIMITATIONS:
• In case of ankle injury, this posture should be avoided.
• In case of knee or back injury, avoid practicing this pose.
shirshasana
Benefits:
• Increases focus.
• Improves digestion.
• Relieves stress

Limitations:
• May cause immediate damage to neck and spine.
• May lead to slip disc.
mayurasana
Benefits:
• Provides a good stretch to arms and back.
• Strengthens forearms, elbows, legs and back.
• Effective remedy for diabetes and piles.

Limitations:
• Avoid in high blood pressure and hernia.
• People who have undergone abdominal surgery must avoid practicing this
asana.
VAJRASANA
BENEFITS:
• Helps in keeping mind stable and calm.
• Beneficial in urinary problems.
• Cures in digestion and acidity.

LIMITATIONS:
• People suffering from knee, joint or ankle injury should avoid doing this.
• Avoid practicing this pose in any type of spine injury.
BHUJANGASANA
BENEFITS:
• Improves digestion.
• Relieves stress and anxiety.
• Useful for people suffering from back pain, slipped disc, sciatica and cervical
spondylitis.

Limitations:
• People with neck injury should avoid this posture.
• Avoid during any type of back injury or back pain.

 Yoga is a medicine for nearly every problem.
 As you practice yoga, it not only helps you to improve your physical
body but also helps in maintaining your inner peace and relaxing your
mind.
 Thus, there is nothing that yoga will not help.
 Moreover, yoga is not just a one day practice; it’s a life – long
commitment.
 Yoga helps in relieving depression and anxiety and also helps to
increase focus and concentration.
